Once Upon a Time - Bruce County Memories Bantam Development win B Final at
Elaine Irwin Tournament in Lucknow
My Melodeon
and Memories
Adapted from an article
written by Mary E. Keyes

Historical Society
My story centres around a
small antique melodeon,
owned originally by my mater-
nal grandmother, Mary Jane
(Cunningham) Rowan.
In 1870 David Henry
Rowan and Mary Jane Cun-
ningham were married and
moved to farm on Concession
11, Greenock Township, two -
and -a -half miles south of
Glammis. They built a log
cabin in which to live until
their house was completed.
Mrs. Rowan broughtwithher
some very attractive household
furnishings, among which was
a melodeon, a musical instru-
ment, similar in some ways to a
small organ. It had a bellows
and two foot pedals which had
to be pumped by foot when the
instrument was being played.
The two pedals, when pressed
down, pushed rods up against
the bellows' frame, thus sup-
plying air that was blown
through the reeds.
This melodeon was the first
- such instrument in this com-
munity and it was enjoyed by
friends and neighbours, as
well as by members of the
family. Many an evening was
spent by friends and neigh-
bours, singing to the music of
such old favorites as "Nearer
my God To Thee", "What a
Friend We have In Jesus,' and
also old songs, "Darling Nellie
Gray'; "When the Curtains of
Night are Pinned Back By the
Stars'; and other songs popu-
lar in that day.
Sometimes so many friends
gathered that some of them
would have to sit outside the
cabin on the stumps, but every-
one still joined in the singing.
One can still picture these folks-
- - young, virile and strong, filled
with determination and

enthusiasm to get along well in
this new venture of literally
clearing out the woods and
making homes for themselves
and families.
For all of these neighbours,
the melodeon music brought
back memories of earlier days
spent in older parts of the coun-
try or in the old land.
In 1874, Purdy s Church, on
the 14th Concession of
Greenock Township, was
completed. The walls and ceil-
ings were plastered, wainscot-
ting installed, coal oil lamp
facilities were added, as well
as a new platform, a railing
and new seats.
The congregation then held
a special Dedication Service.
Since the church had no musi-
cal instrument, my grand-
mother, Mrs. Rowan, was
invited to bring her melodeon
to provide the music for the
service. This she agreed to do,
and not only played for the ser -

vice but also sang.
To get to the Purdy church,
one of the members came for
Mrs. Rowan and the melo-
deon. She then had to endure
a long bumpy wagon ride. The
road south of Glammis,
known as the boundary
between Kincardine and
Greenock Townships, was not
at that time open for wagons.
It was just a narrow trail used
for walking through the bush
and swamp. The resulting
roundabout slow trip to the
church ended up covering
about eight -and -a -half miles
of concession and sideroads.
Mrs. Rowan' s daughter,
Elene, Mrs. John Deehan, my
mother, inherited the melo-
deon. It is still in excellent con-
dition and is owned and cher-
ished by me.

The Sepoys played their
first game vs. Lambton
Shores and came out strong
even though they weren't
able to keep a win. They
were 2-0 behind going into
the third and got it to the 2-1
with a goal scored by Landen
Sillib, assisted by Emma
Metcalfe. Lambton Shores
then came back and scored
another 2 goals to get the
win with a 4-1 ending.
This Loss got the Bantam
Sepoys to the B Side of the
tournament and after a little
break they were ready to go
out and try their best. They
played Walkerton #1 and
were quickly behind 2-0
when Cameron Murray was
able to score just shortly
before the end of the second.
His goal was assisted by Jus-
tin Livingston and Tyler
Jones. The boys were on fire
then and Tyler Jones scored
just a minute later to make
the score 2-2. His goal was
assisted by Cameron Mur-
ray. Coming out again into

the third the team was on

ing! Tyler Jones kept on scor-
ing to get a hat trick assisted
by Justin Livingston and
Cameron Murray.
Patrick Angst also got an
unassisted goal to make the
score of the second game
5-2. Walkerton was able to
score one more time but the
Sepoys did hang on to their
win to move on to the B
Final! Every single player put
in their best, it was so great
to watch!
They kept us on the edges
of our seats as they once
again came out to play great
hockey in the B Final Game.
The last game was played vs.
Mount Forest and they got
an early lead of 1-0. Once
again the Sepoys found
themselves behind but
didn't wait too long. Patrick
Angst scored unassisted to
make it a 1-1 game. Going
into the third period Mount
Forest was able to pull ahead
again to make it 2-1 but Luc -
