Canaa'a pocnaI Member of the Canadian Community Newspaper Association and the Ontario Community Newspapers Association Val's Views Valerie Gillies Springing into Spring It is officially spring, at least by the cal- endar, but in this area we know this is often debatable from day to day. That is not stopping some people from looking ahead to a new season. It is an indication that it is time for win- ter to leave when the hockey tournaments and playoffs are in full force. Erin Gilchrist is looking forward to her internship in Kenya. A very successful chili lunch fundraiser has raised her spirits as she feels the support of family, friends and community as she begins her adventures in a faraway land. Lots of spring green dec- orations were used to give a St. Patrick's Day theme, but also brightened spirits that just needed to see some greenery. The Lucknow Sepoy Ranees also dawned their green finery to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. No red hats in sight that day. The Huron -Kinloss Cultural Roundtable is getting into the sprucing up projects, with the first being the mural to be painted in Ripley. This is an opportunity for those with historical photos to come forward and participate in a beautification project by submitting them for consideration. The Roots of Bruce is organizing the 2015 program for Bruce County grade 5-6 students to immerse themselves in agri- culture. After months of preparation the Huron County Food Charter has been launched and a Seed Library has been ini- tiated for those with an itchy green thumb. Staying with the nature theme, Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority has awarded Cordner Farms a Conservation Award in just one event to celebrate Inter- national Year of Soils 2015. What is your spring project for 2015? Are you planning to do some major renova- tions or sprucing up this year? Are you going to expand or add more variety to your garden and landscape? Perhaps you are planning a trip or a day tour. Are you dreading spring cleaning? Ah yes, the wonderful transition time from snow pud- dles to mud puddles... Whatever your plans for the new season, please share your adventures, news, sports scores and photos (in .jpg format please) with the readers of the Sentinel by sending your submissions to lucknow.editorial@ sunmedia.ca. Lucknow News By Ruth Dobrensky Another spring break has come and gone, we hear the kids (and older kids) around town had a good week, some- times at home, sometimes not. When you reach my age and have no kids or grandchildren around, you don't even realize there is a spring break until it's over. However, that wasn't the case in town, a number of enterprising people, Danielle Sutton to name one, invited a number of kids into her place of business to learn how to paint. I heard from a good source that they had a great time. Con- gratulations to the library and all individ- uals and businesses who went out of their way to provide programs, places and materials for the kids who were "stranded" in town for the week. Happy late 90th birthday to Ross Hen- derson who celebrated recently. We wish you many more. Another person who recently had a birthday was Gerald Wagner who turned, I believe, 95. Congrats Gerry. Do you think spring has arrived finally? Every time I think we're finally experiencing actual spring weather, mother nature decides to go two steps back and remind us we can't get out our shorts and sandals yet, darn! Are you ready for Easter? It's coming up fast and I hear the Easter bunny will be back in town to bring eggs to all the "children': This child is looking forward to Easter when I can finally have some chocolate again, when you're a choco- holic, it really is a difficult thing to give up for Lent. My next big decision is where to donate the money I set aside each day during Lent, there are so many charities out there it makes for a tough decision. Menno Miller and Levi Yoder and many other among the Amish commu- nity have tapped their maple trees. Something new this year, they are using plastic bags instead of pails. I am told it gives a better quality of syrup. I hope everyone has a good run this year. Three weeks ago they were tapping in the London and Komoka area so this area is a little late. Lloyd Graham of Whitechurch visited in St. Helen's at Eli Byler's harness shop on March 11. The Rev. Canon Kim Van Allen has been appointed the new Rector at Christ Church, Port Albert and St. George's, Goderich. Rev. Kim will com- mence her duties as of June 1, 2015. A hearty welcome is extended to her. There have been 2 skunks and 1 raccoon with distemper in the last month here in Dungannon so watch your pets and kids. If you have some news you would like to see here call Shag at 519-529-7734. Kinloss Kairshea WI Submitted The Kinloss Kairshea WI held their fun meeting at Sepoy Manor on March 19 2015. June Gilchrist thanked everyone for all the fun and especially Sepoy Manor for their wonderful hospitality. The meeting was closed with "0 Canada': The Planning an event? Don't forget to advertise!
