Mary Anne Kukoly
The March meeting of the
Purple Grove Women's
Institute was held at Mary
Anne Kukoly's. All who were
able to attend appreciated
the presentation by Cindy
Cartwright of Southamp-
ton. She spoke about her
passion for hummingbirds,
research and banding. Cin-
dy's power point presenta-
tion was so interesting.
Maureen Collins read the
Scripture. The roll call was
answered by an interesting
fact about humming-
birds. Convener Deanna
Scott led us in some Irish
songs and closed her por-
tion of the meeting with the
Irish Blessing.
We all enjoyed the lunch
provided by Janet Nixon
and Donna Swan. The
hummingbird cake was a
great hit.
The meeting closed with
singing of "0 Canada':

Lucknow UCW
Nancy Walden
Lucknow UCW Afternoon
Group met on a snowy
March 3 at River Valley
Apartments for a program
on Lent, winter, and St.
Patrick's.
Joyce Adamson welcomed
nine members and two visi-
tors with a reading "The
More You Give': Nancy Wal-
den read thoughts on Lent
suggesting ways to take time
to nurture and support our
spirits. Joyce read about
while giving up things for
Lent, ways one could also
pay it forward to someone
needing help.
Gertie Henderson read
scripture from Isaiah 58: 6,7
and devotional". We sang "All
beautiful the march of days".
As we are still deeply in win-
ter cold and snow, Joyce
read some facts about snow.
Nancy talked about the
days of March ahead: World
Day of Prayer, school Winter
Break week, St. Patrick's Day,
spring equinox Mar 20, and
our annual Church Beef
Supper and Concert May 22
to name a few. She asked
how many of us had some
Irish ancestry (all but one),
who had visited Ireland
(none), and who wished to
have visited Ireland (all).
Elaine Errington volun-
teered that one of her mater-
nal great great grandfathers,
Wm Mallough, emigrated
from Ireland and founded
Dungannon just south of us.
We sang "For the beauty of
the earth". Joyce, Gertie, and
Nancy each read some Irish
poems and blessings. Joyce
tested our St. Patrick's/Irish
knowledge with an Irish
quiz. Program ended with
Edna Alton reading a lovely
poem anticipating the joy of
spring.
Shirley Bolt opened busi-
ness reading about March 17
to honour the Irish. Roll Call
was donations towards
Church outdoor
plants. Shirley gave the
Treasurer's report.
Bakeless Bake Sale enve-
lopes were distributed for
return in May. We were sorry
to learn Helen Cleland has
just broken a hip and is in
hospital—we send our
prayers for good recovery to
Helen.
Shirley read the Least Coin
Newsletter about World Day
of Prayer written this year by
women of The Bahamas,
who give thanks for the
beauty of the sand and
ocean and the continued
life-giving bounty from the
ocean.
Marlene Struthers was
with us to give details of our
joint noon luncheon with
the WWAM group on April 7
at the Church and a Church
fundraiser later in
April. Shirley ended business
with an excellent reading
about simpler times by Joyce
Nicholson in the "Tweeds-
muir" book. We repeated the
UCW Closing Prayer.
We enjoyed continued fel-
lowship with a light lunch
prepared by Elaine and
Gertie.
