Nominations Open for Annual Huron Cultural Awards
A, Huron Arts &
Heritage
Netowork
Submitted
Do you know of a group
or an individual who has
made an outstanding con-
tribution to arts, culture or
heritage in Huron County
during 2014? It's once again
time to recognize them. The
Huron Arts & Heritage Net-
work (HAHN), in partner-
ship with Cultural Services
of the County of Huron, is
accepting nominations for
its sixth annual Cultural
Awards celebration.
The awards recognize the
exceptional achievements of
Huron County residents, busi-
nesses, and organizations in
the following categories: Indi-
vidual Artist, Community
Event or Organization, Youth
Award, Heritage Individual or
Organization and Community
Contribution of a Volunteer or
Patron.
"This is an opportunity to
celebrate those who make
significant contributions to
the arts and heritage sector
of Huron," says Deb Shold-
ice, HAHN Chairperson. "We
encourage everyone to sub-
mit a nomination for their
favourite artist, musician,
arts project or organization,
heritage event or group, vol-
unteer, or supporter, essen-
tially all of the people who
make the arts, culture and
heritage sector of Huron
County so great."
Nomination submissions
require a nomination form
and a short description
(maximum of one page)
explaining what the nomi-
nee accomplished in 2014 in
their category and why you
think it is worthy of recogni-
tion. Nomination forms and
award criteria are available
online at creativehuron.ca or
by following the link on the
Huron Arts & Heritage Net-
work Facebook page. Printed
copies are also available at
any Huron County Library
branch during regular
branch hours. Nominations
will be accepted until end of
day on April 3, 2015.
Finalists and winners in
each category will be
selected by a jury from the
eligible nominations
received. In keeping with
previous years, winners in
each category will be pre-
sented with an original work
of art created by a local art-
ist. This year's awards will be
created by Susan Hay, a vis-
ual artist located in Ben -
miller and last year's
recipient of the Individual
Artist Award.
The Cultural Awards
Gala is Friday, May 1st at
the White Carnation Ban-
quet Hall in Holmesville.
As well as recognizing the
finalists and winners, this
special evening also fea-
tures entertainment by a
variety of Huron County
artists. There is also a
silent auction of unique
items at the Awards Gala
supporting the activities
of Huron Arts & Heritage
Network. The event starts
with a cocktail social at
5:30 pm followed by a buf-
fet dinner at 6:30 pm and
the awards presentations
at 7:30 pm. Tickets are
$25.00 each and can be
purchased through the
Blyth Festival box office at
519-523- 9300 or toll free
at 1-877-862-5984.
Saturday, April 18.
The Heroes of Huron with
then move further into Bel-
gium and into the Nether-
lands to visit those from
Huron County who fell dur-
ing WWII. The Canadian
flag, the Canadian Ensign
that flew between 1921-
1957 and the Ontario Ensign
will be placed. The group
will be participating in cer-
emonies and the celebra-
tion of the 70th year of the
liberation of the
Netherlands.
Jim Rutledge of Goderich
is an author and historian
whose passion is the history
of our past and present vet-
erans. He has published a
book about the 204 men
from Huron County who
paid the supreme sacrifice
during WWII. Rutledge
invites anyone who may be
interested in following the
group to just the Facebook
group "The Heroes of Huron
Journey of Honour and
Remebrance 2015".
With this being an anni-
versary year of WWI, as
well as the 70th anniver-
sary of the end of WWII in
the Netherlands, Rutledge
would like to know if any-
one from Lucknow and the
surrounding area might be
attending any of the over-
seas celebrations and cer-
emonies. He can be con-
tacted at 519-524-1808 or
bookofhonour3946@
