ACW Cemeteries
This is a message directed
to Members of ACW Council.
Since becoming involved
with researching information
for the updated version of
the East Ashfield History
Book, I have become aware
of the number of early set-
tlers to Ashfield Twp that
were buried in Hope Ceme-
tery (W V2 Lot 5, Con 14) and
Zion Cemetery (N V2 Lot 9,
Con 12).
I have observed that these
two cemeteries are in very
poor condition. The "vegeta-
tion" is cut once a year in
June and then left looking
like an abandoned pasture
field. I have not seen
another pioneer cemetery in
the township, county or
province in a similar condi-
tion. Do these early pio-
neers, who cleared the for-
ests, built roads and found
Don't let it happen to you!
Dear Editor,
When it comes to acci-
dents, it's common to think,
oh, it will never happen to
us. That is what we thought
until our nine-year-old
daughter, Zoe, a member of
The War Amps Child Ampu-
tee (CHAMP) Program, lost
her leg in a lawn mower
accident.
A few years ago, Zoe was
playing outside when she
slipped on the grass and
fell underneath a riding
lawn mower. This was a
difficult time for us but
today Zoe is an active and
energetic child thanks to
help from The War Amps
with financial assistance
for artificial legs, regional
the communities that we
enjoy today, not deserve
better?
There was a discussion
about the condition of the
Hope Cemetery in a 1958
Lucknow Sentinel issue.
What is the policy today con-
cerning our pioneer ceme-
teries? Is that policy available
to be viewed by the public?
I hope the ACW Township
Council of 2015 will show
seminars and peer
support.
With lawn cutting season
here, we want to help
spread the message across
the country that kids should
never be around lawn
mowers. Accidents can
happen in the blink of an
eye. We hope that Zoe's
story will help prevent even
some respect and improve
the condition of the burial
grounds of Ashfield's early
settlers.
Incidentally, I do not have
an ancestor or relative bur-
ied in either cemetery.
I look forward to Council's
response.

The Lucknow Horticultural
Society held their annual pot-
luck and garden tour on June
16, with 30 members present.
Following a delicious smorgas-
bord supper at the town hall,
we were presented with a gen-
erous gift of money. Joan
Chamney, chairperson from
the Reunion Committee,
stated that this was to assist us
with flowers for the
beautification of Luclmow. We
then toured three unique and
lovely gardens in this area.
