The Jubilee Gala of the Alice
Munro Festival of the Short Story
was held on Saturday, June 6 at the
Knights of Columbus Hall in Wing -
ham. The festival was a cooperative
project of Huron County, Township
of North Huron and the Township
of Morris-Turnberry. The Festival is
founded on the principals of
respecting communications and
encouraging the writing of short
stories.
Guest speaker, author Lisa
Moore, gave a very interesting
talk on the works of both author
Alice Munro and artist Mary Pratt,
comparing the two whose work
has combined with Pratt's art
appearing on some of Munro's
book covers. Moore described
both women as adding detail
after detail in their respective
works to create a hyper -realism
which made the reader or viewer
of the paintings and photography
"see deeper than we would nor-
mally see." Both are roughly con-
temporaries and had an obses-
sion with the same types of
choices in subject matter to chal-
lenge stereotypes of gender,
womanhood, sexuality and
domesticities.
Moore explained that when
Munro started writing in the
1930's it was considered laugha-
ble for an adult to consider mak-
ing a career of writing, but even
more outrageous for someone
who was living in a rural area
and again even more so for a
woman. Munro's characters are
rural females, but are not stereo-
typical. They are full of contra-
dictions and are confronting.
They pursue the idea of freedom
and are radical and in flux.
Throughout her presentation,
Moore showed slides of Pratt's
art to illustrate the similarities
between the layers used in the
prints to the layers used to create
the characters and circum-
stances in Munro's stories.
Following the presentation, the
finalists of the Short Story Com-
petition were invited onto the
stage to read portions of their sto-
ries to the gathering. The winners
were announced after the
readings.
The winner for the Youth Cate-
gory was Michelle Kasovitski of
Goderich who won with her entry
"Caretaker of Time": Honourable
mentions went to Bronte Crons-
berry with her entry "Pointed
Girl" and Katherine Talbot with
