United Church of
Canada turns 90
Bell rings out
over Lucknow

Lucknow Sentinel
June 10, 2015 marked the
90th anniversary of the for-
mation of the United Church
of Canada. To celebrate this
milestone, all United Church
buildings in Canada who still
have a working bell in their
tower were asked to ring the
bell 90 times at 11 am on that
day.
Lucknow United Church
does still have a working bell
that is occasionally rung for
special occasions or during
school programs. Some
churches now have electron-
ically rung bells in that the
bells are controlled by an
electronic button that is
pushed to have the mecha-
nisms ring the bells. Luc-
know's bell is the traditional
type of bell that has a rope
that is physically pulled to
swing the bell to make it
ring.
The heavy rope -pulled
bells are challenging to ring
as it requires a lot of strength
to swing the bell, even after
momentum has begun to
help. For this reason, it was
decided that the Lucknow
United Church bell would be
rung at 3:30 pm on June 10 to
have an athletic and fit stu-
dent available to perform the
task once the school day was
ended. Chasity Murray, a
student of Lucknow Central
Public School and daughter
or Chopper Murray was cho-
sen to ring the bell.
Murray started out strong,
but it was soon evident that
it was going to be a challenge
to ring the bell 90 times. For-
tunately, Murray had been
accompanied by Alexis Greig
and her brother Hunter who
had agreed to help count the
rings. Alexis stepped up and
helped pull the rope to assist
Chasity Murray was chosen
for her athletic fitness to ring
the bell at the Lucknow United
Church to celebrate the 90th
anniversary of the United Church
of Canada on June 10, 2015.

90 bell tolls.
These girls are to be com-
mended for stepping up to
meet the challenge and in
doing so becoming a deserving
part of the history of the Luc -
know United Church in partic-
ipating in this celebratory bell

sary of the United Church of
Canada. Well done Chasity
Murray and Alexis Grieg.
