HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 2015-06-10, Page 11Madill Athietes at OFSAA West Regions track and field Maureen Lisle With the level of compe- tition almost as tough as OFSAA itself, Madill ath- letes were aware plenty of challenges lay ahead as they joined the other 1300 athletes competing at OFSAA West Region- als. The meet was held at TD Waterhouse Stadium at University of Western Ontario. The 16 athletes from Madill who competed rose to the occasion and earned 8 'personal best' performances, seven top six rankings, and qualified 3 athletes to compete at OFSAA. Going into the discus event ranked 5th, Ben Newell knew he would have to throw well in order to place in the top four and qualify. He hurled the dis- cus 46.97m to earn a per- sonal best throw and also place 3rd to earn a qualify- ing position. This marks the second consecutive year in which Newell has qualified for OFSAA track and field. Jessica Johnston contin- ued to lower her hurdle times in both the sprint hurdles and 300m hur- dles. However, it was high jump where she cleared the bar at 1.45m that earned her a 4th place fin- ish and a qualifying place for OFSAA. Justin McKague who showed good form as he cleared 1.91m to earn third place. To his credit, this will be McKague's fourth time at OFSAA. OFSAA (Ontario Federa- tion of Secondary School Athletic Association) is the high school provincial championship. This year it is held at Varsity Center on the Unversity of Toronto campus June 4-6. Several athletes on the Madill team are also prepar- ing for District C Legion meet to be held June 13 at the Davidson Center in Kincardine. Carter's Crokinole Report Peter Carter On Wednesday evening June 3, 23 players with various talents gathered together at The Old School House in Scone for another enjoyable evening of progressive crokinole. When the shooting was complete the following winners were announced. On the men's side it was Ross MacLeod claiming first with 50 points Neil Cook took second with 46 and Clare Kuepfer had 42 for third. In the twenties section Al MacLeod shot 45 for first Al Carter took sec- ond with 44 and Clare claimed third with 43 centres. On the ladies side it was Carol Cook shooting well with 47 points for first Cathy Kuepfer had 40 for second spot while Vera Gutzke came in third with 35. Carol also took first place in the twenties with 34 Cathy had 32 for second while Jo- Ann Carter placed third with 24. Lucky door prize winners included Sharmane Carter, Carman Hodgkinson and Clare.
