Madill athletes qualify in 25
events for OFSAA Regionals

In midget girls, Jessica Johnston
qualified in all three of her individual
events. She sprinted over the 80m
hurdles in her best lime of the season
(13.76s) to win second, soared over
the high jump bar at 1.48m to earn
another second, and clinched a solid
fourth place in her 300m hurdle run.
In the midget girls long jump, Lexi
Smith leaped 4.46 m, her best jump of
the season, to earn a qualifying posi-
tion. In the throwing circles, Jasmine
Vader and Taylor Montgomery again
performed well with both earning
qualifying spots in shot put and with
Vader earning a WOSSAA bronze
medal and another qualifying posi-
tion in discus with a best ever throw of
25.39m. Although distance runner,
Emma Metcalfe did not qualify for the
next level, she has continued to
improve her times at every meet.
Junior girl, Sydney Wightman rose
to the challenge in discus when she
hurled the implement 27.71m, her
best distance so far this season.
Wightman also won a WOSSAA
bronze medal and a qualifying berth.
Senior girls were well repre-
sented across different events and
earned the following qualifying
positions. Jayden Anderson -John-
ston leaped 4.80m in long jump;
Emily Meier ran a gutsy 800m;
Karissa Schiestel came from
behind in discus (27.79m).
In midget boys, Matt Darrell met
the challenge in the gruelling 400m
to earn his best time of the season
(56.53s). His triple jump distance
(10.70m) allowed him to qualify in
both events. Team mate, Mitch
Deans sprinted the 200m stretch in
a 'personal best' time (24.65s) to
win a WOSSAA bronze medal. His
triple jump of 10.71m also clinched
a fourth place in that event.
Junior boys had two qualifiers.
Ben Newell won two silver medals,
one in discus with a throw of
43.79m and one in high jump with
a leap of 1.73m. Newell also won
fourth in javelin with a throw of
46.66m. Team mate Mitch Ward,
continuing to compete despite a
heavy cast on one hand, was able
to throw the discus 38.39m and
qualify in that event.
The lone first place and gold medal
for Madill came from Justin McKague
in high jump when he soared over the
bar at 1.89m. McKague also qualfied
in long jump when he overcame the
6m barrier for the first time with a
leap of 6.09m. Team mate Stuart
Cameron qualified in two events,
both fourth place finishes. He hurled
the discus 41.20m heaved the shot
15.23m. His javelin throw of 43.59m
placed him seventh, one place out of
the qualifiers but the performance
was a significant improvement in dis-
tance. In senior boys hurdles, Lyndon
Smith sprinted over the barriers to
earn fourth and in senior boys triple
jump, Billy Darrell clinched a qualify-
ing spot with a leap of 12.05m.
The fifteen Madill athletes com-
pete in twenty five events next at
OFSAA West Regionals to be held
at the same location May 29, 30.
Advancement from this meet to
OFSAA required placing in the top
four. Some of the team are also pre-
paring for the District C Legion
Meet on June 13 in Kincardine.

There's a motivational saying
that 'it's not about the destination,
it's about the journey: For Kincar-
dine resident Melissa Bennett,
there's no better way to describe
her on-going cancer journey.
Diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lym-
phoma at just 27 years old, Ben-
nett is still in remission but focus-
ing on her studies to be a
Registered Nurse. "I am hoping to
be deemed Cancer Free at the end
of this year," Bennett explains. "I
decided I would love to help peo-
ple the way I was helped while
going through cancer. I have gone
back to school and have been
accepted into the RN program at
Georgian College & York
University."
Bennett looks back on her jour-
ney with gratitude for all of the
support in her community, from
cards and kind words to a hand-
made collaborative quilt. She has
taken this support and tried to
return it, by taking part in Relay
For Life in Kincardine. Bennett
recalls her first Relay when she
was asked to take part in the Survi-
vor Victory lap. "I didn't think it
was proper, because I wasn't in
remission or cancer free," she says.
"But the lady at the desk said, 'if
you are fighting cancer you are a
survivor!' and it's great to know
you have an amazing support
group by your side. Everything

from a phone buddy with the
same cancer you have that you can
call and ask all the questions you
want." Money raised from Relay
For Life in Kincardine supports all
aspects of the Canadian Cancer
Society's mission to eradicate can-
cer and enhance the lives of those
living with cancer. This includes
helping over 17,000 Grey Bruce
residents access support - like
Bennett did by talking to someone
who's been through a similar
experience - information, and safe
rides to cancer -related medical
appointments in 2014.
Since two out of every five Cana-
dians will develop cancer in their
lifetime, Bennett urges others to
participate within their communi-
ties and help support those who
may be going through what she
has. As a Survivor, Bennett says, "I
think it is important to be part of
Relay not only for yourself, but for
other people. You never realize
how much you inspire others"
Just as cancer can bring a com-
munity or family together, Relay
For Life's emotionally -charged
highlights, such as the Survivor's
Victory Lap and Luminary

describes her first Relay experience
as, "overwhelming at first, with so
many people on the sidelines who
