letter to the editor
Presentation by General Dallaire
Dear Editor,
I was deeply inspired to hear
General Dallaire's recent pres-
entation in Kincardine on the
occasion of his recent visit to
the federal riding of Huron -
Bruce. Mr. Allen Thompson,
the Liberal candidate for Huron
Bruce, introduced him as one
of the greatest humanitarians
that he had ever known. As
General Dallaire shared his life's
story, one had to agree that he
was a man of a great compas-
sion, humility, intellect and
vision. He is a man possessed of
a deep caring for all human
beings, regardless of colour, reli-
gion, faith and social sta-
tus. Despite being a retired mili-
tary man, he lamented the vast
amounts of money being
spent by the world's leaders on
arms and the military.
As I listened to his story
unfold, I was convinced that he
would much rather wage
peace than wage war. He drew
attention to fact that Canada
has lost its reputation as
a nation of peace keepers, and
that Canada, as a middle
power, could have a greater
emphasis on peace keeping, if
only our national leadership
chose to do so. As the next fed-
eral election draws near, it is
important that Canadians dis-
cuss with candidates the need
for Canada to reconnect with
the United Nations in order to
restore Canada's hitherto first
class, internationally respected
reputation as a peace -loving
and peace -keeping nation. In
so doing, each one of us can
help to keep General Dallaire's
vision of a more just and
peaceful world alive.
Yours sincerely,
Jim Hollingworth.
MD, Goderich.
Appeal of wind turbine
Charter challenge denied
Postmedia Network
The Ontario Court of
Appeal has declined to hear
the appeal of four southwest-
ern families battling against
wind turbine projects.
The families had lost a
Charter challenge last year
and were seeking an appeal of
the decision.
They contend that provisions
in the Environmental Protec-
tion Act approving renewable
energy projects "exposes them
to a reasonable prospect of seri-
ous harm to their health and
therefore does not comply with
the Canadian Charter of Rights
and Freedoms!'
The Ontario Divisional Court
ruled against the four families
(the Drennans, Ryans, Dixsons
and Kroeplins) on December
29, 2014.
Shawn Drennan, one of the
appellants in the case, said in
a media release, "We are dis-
appointed with the court's
decision not to hear our case.
No one has been able to tell us
that the turbines are safe. We
are being told we have to wait
to be harmed before we can
do anything to stop them!'
"The court has given us two
choices: leave the land my
family has farmed for three
generations or be a guinea pig

At the meeting of the
Wingham & District Hospital
Board on May 27, members
of the Wingham & District
Hospital Foundation pre-
sented their annual dona-

amount of $205,951. These
funds supported the pur-

extension.
The WDH Foundation raises
money annually through the
Radiothon, mail campaigns,
fundraising events, grants,

wind companies," Drennan
added.
Julian Falconer, the lawyer
for the families, said the deci-
sion leaves his clients and oth-
ers in an "impossible
position."
"The Health Canada Study
has already shown an associa-
tion between the turbines and
serious health effects," Fal-
coner stated in the media
release.
The Health Canada study,
released in November 2014,
indicated there is no evidence
of a direct link between wind
turbine noise and health
effects.
However, it did note there
can be a connection between
the noise and annoyance, and
that those who are annoyed
are more likely to report other
health issues.
The four families were origi-
nally ordered to pay $340,000
in court costs to three compa-
nies, K2 Wind Ontario, St.
Columban Energy LP and
Armow Wind, but that figure
was later lowered to $67,000.
