Steph Smith
Goderich Signal Star
Canada Post issued a col-
lectible stamp on July 10 to
celebrate the contributions
that author Alice Munro has
made to the literary world.
The stamp, released on
Munro's 84th birthday, was
designed by Marcio
Morgado and Paul Haslip of
Toronto's HM&E. It incorpo-
rates a black and white
photo of Munro taken by her
daughter Sheila, a sample of
Munro's handwriting as well
as a vintage photo of Wing -
ham, Munro's birthplace.
Munro was born on July
10, 1931 in Wingham. She
attended the University of
Western Ontario and pub-
lished her first short story in
the university's literary mag-
azine. Her first book of short
stories was published in
1969, and since then she has
published 15 more.
Munro is widely regarded
as one of the most important
short story writers in Canada

In the Great Storm of 1913, off the shore of Bayfield on Lake Huron, the
mighty SS Wexford went down with all her hands. There were no survivors.
A young woman, her forbidden love, a zealous guardian, the would-be heir, a
bare -knuckle boxer, and an irresistible singer with a voice clear and colourful
as a Huron sunset, all stand poised on the brink of destruction and destiny.

world. Her work has been
described as having "revolu-
tionized the architecture of
the short story," especially in
her ability to move both for-
ward and backward in time.
Described as Canada's
Chekov, Munro is known
for her short stories set in
small towns that reflect her
native Huron County, as
well as her tendency to
explore the complexities
and frailties of the human
condition, writing about
such topics in an uncom-
plicated and easily under-
stood prose -style.
Munro is the recipient of
many literary accolades,
including being first woman
to receive the 2013 Nobel
Prize in Literature.
The 10 -stamp booklet was
produced in a quantity of
150,000 and is available online
at www.canadapost.ca/shop/.
