The push is on to install a
unique historical mural on a
building across from Lewis
Park in Ripley in time for the
2015 Ripley Reunion.
In the fall of 2014, the
Township of Huron -Kinloss
applied for a grant through
Community Foundation of
Grey Bruce to install a mural
on the David Brown building
in downtown Ripley. The
application was successful
and was matched by the
building's owner and the
Nuclear Waste Management
Organization. It was now
time to come up with a
mural idea.
CoBalt Connects is a
non-profit arts service
organization that com-
pleted the Huron -Kinloss
Cultural Action Plan in
2013. This organization
has been working with
local community groups
to guide and help them to
set goals, work on special
projects and build their
capacity to become more
effective in reaching their
goals.
A unique idea for a mural
that would celebrate
the heritage of Ripley was
proposed by CoBalt Con-
nects. The community was
asked to submit historic
photos to the organization
that depicted local people
building the community.
Among those chosen CoBalt
Connects to become part of
the mural were a women's
hockey team from the 1800s,
a pony named Prince with a
two child riders, an original
Councillor named Dan,
blacksmiths, people working
in the fields and a decorated
bicycle and rider.
These images were
enlarged and the main sub-
jects were reproduced as
weather -resistant figures that
could then be individually
mounted to the building. The
first of these figures were
installed with the help of com-
munity volunteers on June 27
and 28. More figures will be
added in the coming weeks
with the goal of having the
mural completed before the
Reunion which runs from July
30 to August 3.
Taralyn Martin, Business
and Economic Officer of the
Township of Huron -Kinloss
stated, "The mural is some-
thing you really need to see
in person."
