Bird Show
at the Co-op
this summer
Goderich Co-op

"The bird dares to break the
shell, then the shell breaks
open, and the bird can fly
openly. This is the simplest
principle of success. You
dream, you dare, and you fly."
[Ayivor]
Founding member of the
Goderich Co-op Gallery, Bill Gar -
row dreamed. dared and carved,
with lively and colorful bird carv-
ings so realistic that they seemed
about to fly. Honoring Bill's mem-
ory, the Co-op members will each
, in their own way celebrate birds
of the world through their artistic
talents and daring. During the
summer, these creations will
show in the gallery. Opening the
show on Saturday, July 4 at 2 pm,
will be a long time family friend
and town councilor, Myles
Murdock.
Partnering with the Huron
County Museum will bring a
new dimension to this endeavor
as the museum has a traveling
exhibit of feathered friends from
the Museum of Nature in
Ottawa. Artists will be popping
up at the Museum, creating on
site, and Museum displays will
appear through the gallery.
Who was Bill Garrow, some
may be asking? In 1957, Bill and
his wife Doreen moved to
Goderich where Bill had been
hired to teach physics, and
coach junior football. While
busily employed, Bill started
carving birds in 1983, with
courses following his first two
years of self teaching. In 1995,
he retired from teaching and
devoted even more time to his
birds, winning several competi-
tions, teaching wildfowl carving,
and enjoying the fellowship of
many carving clubs.
Bill started showing his birds
in 2003, at the Goderich Co-op
Gallery in 2003 and quickly
gained a group of devoted col-
lectors of his work. A dedicated
member of the Co-op, Bill said
that he "was proud of this
group's progress and the contri-
bution it made to the cultural
life of the community."
Continuing the celebration of
"Bill's birds", during the summer
, will be talks of bird photogra-
phy, and activities involving the
family, including a talk and hike
by Maitland Trail association
birder Roger Goddard. On Sat-
urday, August 15, at the gallery,
Roger will show photos of vari-
ous local birds to watch for, then
at 4 pm will conduct a hike
across the Menesetung bridge to
find some of these species.
The public is welcome to attend
all the above. Tour the gallery,
become inspired, so that you too
might dare to dream and fly.
The gallery is open Monday to
Saturday, from 10 am to 5 pm
and always has a working artist
on duty. For more information,

together, the Foundation approached
the Millers with the idea to transform
a personal celebration into a legacy of
support for Grey Bruce.
Reflecting the Miller family's
long-standing ties to agriculture, the
couple is developing the Larry &
Darlene Miller Agricultural Endow-
ment Fund to provide an annual
bursary in perpetuity to students in
Grey and Bruce Counties who pur-
sue post -secondary university, col-
lege or apprenticeship studies in
Agriculture or Agri -Food. This gen-
erous gesture responds to the Foun-
dation's Smart & Caring Education
Initiative, which aims to add one
million dollars to the Foundation's
