Government protects and restores Point Clark Lighthouse
Parks Canada
Ben Lobb, Member of Parlia-
ment for Huron -Bruce, on behalf
of the Honourable Leona Agluk-
kaq, Canada's Minister of the
Environment and Minister
responsible for Parks Canada,
announced the designation of
Point Clark Lighthouse under the
Heritage Lighthouse Protection
Act. Lobb made the announce-
ment at a ceremony marking the
re -opening of the Point Clark
Lighthouse on June 26.
Lobb stated, "Our Govern-
ment's investment demonstrates
a commitment to conserving
our national historic sites and
providing Canadians with
opportunities to connect with
our nation's past. Point Clark
Lighthouse is a key stopping
point on the Bruce Coast Light-
house Tour, and an important
contributor to this region's tour-
ism economy."
Point Clark Lighthouse,
located on 35 kilometres north
of Goderich, is an important
local icon and tourist destina-
tion, and remains a functioning
navigational aid on the shores of
Lake Huron operated by the
Canadian Coast Guard. The 27

Preparing to launch
new website for
local youth
Community Foundation Grey Bruce
For nearly two years Community
Foundation Grey Bruce's Smart &
Caring Education Initiative team
has been developing a new web-
site, www.payforschoolgreybruce.
com, which aims to identify
sources of locally -developed fund-
ing for Grey -Bruce area students
seeking financial support for post-
secondary education and training.
This website will include award
information to support university,
college, apprenticeship and work-
place training programs. The
mobile -friendly website will allow
students the flexibility to search for
student awards through highly
intuitive filters, with searches by
post -secondary pathway, areas of
interest, local boards and schools,
ethnicity, special interest ties and
more.
Community Foundation Grey
Bruce now asks for the communi-
ty's help. The website team has
included details of as many appli-
cation -based student awards as it
was able to obtain during research
for the site, and welcomes any
information that educators, stu-
dents, or the general public can
add to make this locally -focused
application -based student awards
listing as complete as possible.
Please email studentawardscfgb@
bmts.com with any student award
information as soon as possible to
ensure the timely inauguration of
the new site.
The Foundation's Smart & Car-
ing Education Initiative has been
the driver behind the creation of
the website. The need was identi-
fied by local parents and students
who expressed frustration in find-
ing a comprehensive source of
information on financial aid for
local students. The Smart & Caring
Education Initiative also responds
to another local wish: it aims to add
one million dollars to the Founda-
tion's education endowment fund
to provide a massive, much-
needed increase in available fund-
ing for local students. The website
was funded through a grant from
the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
The development team includes a
number of local educators, Ontario
Youth Apprenticeship Program
coordinator Dave Barrett and
Foundation staff.
"We're very excited to launch
this long-awaited site in approxi-
mately 8 weeks. We hope the com-
munity will see the value in the
project as it addresses very real
regional problems. We also hope
that people will contact our office
to ensure we have included every
available source of funding for local
students in our database. If the
award is locally -developed, or
intended for students from Grey
Bruce, we need to know about it.
The awards on the site will be
application based only, excluding
strictly internal school awards. The
public is also invited to work with
us to create new sources of funding
for local students through tax-
deductible donations in the crea-
tion of new endowed education
funds" said Kimberley West, Chair
of Community Foundation Grey
Bruce.

cast iron is typical of the six
"Imperial" towers built in the
region, a lighthouse style rarely
seen elsewhere in Canada.
Marking the location of a dan-
gerous shoal in Lake Huron,
Point Clark Lighthouse provides
greater navigational safety for
commercial and passenger traf-
fic on the lake.
The Township of Huron -Kin-
loss has an agreement with Parks
Canada to open the lighthouse to
visitors and operates the light -
keeper's house as a local
museum. Canadians now have
the opportunity to re -discover
this unique and nationally signif-
icant place on the shores of Lake
Huron.
Mayor Mitch Twolan, Township
of Huron -Kinloss stated, "The
Government of Canada's invest-
ment to repair and conserve this
beautiful lighthouse will ensure
its place as a key feature of the
Bruce Coast Lighthouse Tour
where it will continue to be a
tourist destination to be enjoyed
for generations to come. The re-
opening of the lighthouse also
marks the 160th anniversary
since the original construction
began at the Point Clark Light-
house in 1855."
The Government of Canada
invested $3.7M in the conserva-
t i o n project to
preserve the lighthouse for
future generations. Conservation
work completed included stabi-
lizing the exterior stones of the
tower, repairing the masonry and
replacing windows.
The Heritage Lighthouse Protec-
tion Act allows for the identifica-
tion and protection of federally -
owned lighthouses on Canada's
coastal and inland waters that
have significant heritage value.
Adopted in May 2008 and admin-
istered by Parks Canada, the Act
helps ensure that the heritage
character of designated light-
houses is protected for the benefit
and enjoyment of present and
future generations.
