The Lucknow Sentinel, 2015-01-21, Page 3Alzheimer Awareness Month Targets Women with "The 72%" Campaign Women doubly affected says Alzheimer Society Submitted Did you know that women represent 72 per cent of Canadians living with Alzhei- mer's disease? They could be your mothers, wives, sisters, grandmothers or friends - even you. The Alzheimer Society is kicking off Alzheimer Aware- ness Month with a nation- wide campaign called The 72%. It aims to inform women in their 40's and older about the warning signs of Alzheimer's disease, brain health and how the Alzhei- mer Society can help. Women live longer than men and age is a significant risk factor. That's why there are more women living with Alzheimer's disease than men. Yet the impact on women is twofold. They also account for 70 per cent of family caregivers, which takes a tremendous toll on these women who eventually provide round-the-clock care. The burden is especially high for women raising fami- lies and holding down jobs. "With this campaign, we're making Alzheimer's disease a women's issue," says Mimi Lowi Young, CEO, Alzheimer Society of Canada. "Women lead busy, hectic lives, often paying the price with their own health and well-being. We're asking them to invest time in understanding the warning signs. Whether they're concerned about get- ting Alzheimer's, have just been diagnosed or are a car- egiver, we want women to reach out to their local Alzhei- mer Society. We can support them throughout the disease:' Warning signs, often mis- understood or ignored, are critical. In absence of a cure, early diagnosis allows for treatment and support so people can live as well as pos- sible and start planning for their future needs. "Women traditionally monitor the health of their families so it's even more important they understand this disease to be able to rec- ognize changes in those they care for," adds Lowi-Young. The Alzheimer Society invites all Canadians to visit www.alzheimer.ca/the72per- cent to take a moment and learn the warning signs and share them with friends and families on Facebook and Twitter. They can also read the stories of others living with Alzheimer's disease and post their own experiences. Visitors will also be able to download other helpful resources and find their local Alzheimer Society. Alzheimer's Disease Facts Alzheimer's disease is the lead- ing form of dementia. It is pro- gressive and eventually, fatal. Today, 747,000 Canadians are living with some form of dementia. This number will nearly double to 1.4 mil- lion in less than 20 years. For every person diagnosed, there are many who are directly affected as caregivers. The risk of dementia doubles every five years after age 65. Accumulating evidence shows the disease can lie dormant in the brain up to 25 years before symptoms appear. Common warning signs of Alzheimer's disease include memory loss, impaired judg- ment, thinking or reasoning and changes in personality and behaviour that are out of char- acter. In addition to age, other risks factors include cardiovas- cular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and smoking. To participate in the cam- paign, visit: www.alzhei- m er.ca/the72percent. The 72% campaign is proudly supported by the KPMG Foundation. About the Alzheimer Society The Alzheimer Society of Huron County is a health char- ity for people living with Alz- heimer's disease and other dementias. Approximately 1200 people in Huron County are living with dementia. The Society offers help for today through our programs and ser- vices, and hope for tomorrow by funding research into the cause, prevention and a cure. Wednesday, January 21, 2015 • Lucknow Sentinel 3 Huron County Exercising the Body and the Brain Submitted Residents of Huron County are stepping for- ward on Saturday, January 31st to support people affected by Alzheimer's dis- ease and other dementias. Over the past 19 years, Huron residents have raised more than $530,000 for programs and services for the more than 1,100 individuals living with dementia in our county, and for other critical activi- ties like education and public awareness. The Alzheimer Society Walk for Memories, locally presented by Investors Group, is the most important fundraising activity for Alz- heimer's disease and other dementias in Canada. Huron is one of 65 communities in Ontario to raise funds and awareness, a movement expected to gather thou- sands of Ontarians taking steps towards a world with- out Alzheimer's. Supporters can donate or register to walk and collect pledges at HYPERLINK "http://www. walkformemories.ca" www. walkformemories.ca. "Age remains the biggest risk factor to dementia. With huge numbers of baby boomers now entering the years of highest risk, if they live long enough 1 in 3 will eventually develop Alzhei- mer's disease," says Cathy Ritsema, Executive Director at the Alzheimer Society of Huron County. "When you walk, you send a message of hope to the more than 1,100 people living with dementia in our commu- nity, and to the thousands who love and care for them. New Active Transportation Videos Feature Huron County Huron County locations and residents are show- cased in a new active transportation video series from the Huron County Health Unit. Active transportation is any method of going from one place to another using your own body. This includes walking, cycling, kayaking, or cross-country skiing. The "What's Your Here to There?" video series fea- tures Huron County resi- dents showing how they use active transportation. "The purpose of these videos is to raise aware- ness of what active trans- portation is and where it can be done in Huron County," says Laura Dek- roon, Public Health Pro- moter. "We also want to get residents excited about active transportation opportunities in their communities!' Places and people in the videos include an outdoor eel 1,164-73,14125 artiQt WW2 IIVLid rrtra eldedic.42rt t711!11:di9.(F. sports camp in Walton, Bayfield trails, a Seaforth farm, a Goderich school and a bicycle club in Wingham. When you fundraise, you make them the promise that help is available now and will continue to be for the future." Walk for Memories is also a great way to stay healthy and lower the risk of dementia. Regular physical activity, like walking, gets the heart pumping, which benefits the brain by encouraging the develop- ment of new cell connec- tions, a process the brain is capable of doing at any age! Walk for fun, fitness and raising much-needed funds and awareness. This will be the final Winter Walk for Memories, as the Alzheimer Society's across Canada prepare to launch the national springtime Walk as we move forward in our fight against demen- tia. Join us, as we celebrate 20 years and the final Walk for Memories in Huron County. There are 5 indoor Walks locally, in Clinton, Exeter, Goderich, Seaforth and Wingham. Registration begins at 9:30am. Welcome ceremonies begin at 10am. To join the Walk, donate to the cause, or for more information about the Walk for Memories, visit www. alzheimer.ca/huroncounty or call (519) 482-1482.
