The Lucknow Sentinel, 2015-01-14, Page 66 Lucknow Sentinel • Wednesday, January 14, 2015 A Sporting Chance Wawanosh 4-H Meetings Maisy Jefferson Meeting two of the Wawanosh A Sporting Chance club was held on Monday, December 29, 2014 at the Jefferson house at 6:45 p.m. President Sarah Alexander opened the meeting with the 4-H pledge and proceeded with roll call. Members were to name a bird that is around in the winter season in Southwestern Ontario and where they had seen this bird. Jolande Oudshoorn read her minutes from the first meeting. Next the members com- piled a list of suggested names for the club. The name that was voted in was the "Wawanosh Winter War- riors': Loretta Higgins is to design the cover page with this name. Then Mary Ellen asked members to report what birds they'd seen at the feeders received at the first meeting. Most of the mem- bers didn't have much to report. They discussed that this maybe due to the fact the birds hadn't realized the new feeder or perhaps the winter hasn't been too hard thus far and there are plenty of other sources of food available. Eileen George talked to the members about different ways to identify birds by char- acterizing them by size, col- our, shape, habits, location, and features such as collars, bibs, and crests. She also showed them a field guide for identifying books. After this lesson on identi- fication, members paired up and had to identify pictures of birds that were posted around the room. Then the members read from the book to learn what different birds eat. Following this dis- cussion, members tried their hand at making bird feeders from plastic pop bottles. Sarah then closed the meeting with the motto. The members then enjoyed bird seed bars made by Jolande Submitted Wawanosh 4-H members Hillary Schramm, Jolande Oudshoorn and Gayle and Lorraine Mcllhargey are in a tight game of dominoes at the January 2, 2015 meeting of A Sporting Chance. with juice from Justin.
