Michael O'Neill, local author,
farmer, and plumber was one of sev-
eral area authors featured at the 2nd
annual Friends of the Port Elgin
Branch of the Bruce County Public
Library Author and Book Fair in Port
Elgin on February 8, 2015. The
Friends of the Library hosted the sec-
ond annual event, themed Connect-
ing Authors, Books & Readers at the
classic Carnegie -funded Library
building in Port Elgin. The public was
able to meet approximately 18
authors from around the area and
chat about writing and the various
ways of publishing their works.
O'Neill stated that it was a very
humbling experience to know that
people were interested in his writing.
He was there to promote his three
successful self -published books,
interact with other writers, as well as
talk about his upcoming book being
published by Brucedale Press.
His writing career began over
twenty years ago when he wrote
"with tongue firmly planted in
cheek" about family life on the
farm and his work as a plumber.
O'Neill's short Christmas stories
were originally published in the
Lucknow Sentinel and eventually
collected into a self -published col-
lection entitled "Christmas Sea-
sonings" in 2009. Two other books,
written for his daughter, Kristen,
"Benny and the Buzzard" and
"Lydia" also met with success in
the area. Michael O'Neill is one of
the founding members of Luc-
know's writing group, "The Luc -
know Scribblers':
One of his short stories about life
on the farm, "A Thorny Problem,
was accepted for inclusion in the
recently published anthology of
short stories by twelve area authors
entitled "Our Family Farm, stories
from Bruce & Grey, Brucedale
Press. The Brucedale Press aver-
ages about three titles per year, pre-
senting books of literary, historical
and pictorial merit focusing on the
Queen's Bush and Bruce Peninsula
areas of Ontario. According to
Anne Duke Judd, Publisher and
Editor of Brucedale Press, O'Neill's
contribution was so well received
that they will be publishing a col-
lection of his work, late in May, just
in time for Father's Day.
Jo -Anne Hammer, Chair of the
Friends of the Port Elgin Branch of
the Bruce County Public Library
stated that they felt it was impor-
tant to give local writers the oppor-
tunity to meet and interact as well
as promoting literacy and giving
local authors more public expo-
sure. Hammer estimated that they
more than doubled the number of
participating authors this year.
Writers came from all over Bruce
and Grey counties.
