OPP encourages locking vehicles during the holiday season
The South Bruce OPP rec-
ommends residents that
vehicle owners and opera-
tors should always follow
the Auto Theft Protection
Tips of the Lock it or Lose it
program.
This becomes especially
important during the holi-
days which are hectic
enough without becoming a
victim of theft.
The Lock it or Lose it tips
not only helps to prevent
auto theft, they also help to
prevent the theft of valuable
objects that may be left in
your vehicle:
• Always roll up the win-
dows, lock the door and
pocket the key.
• If you have a garage, use it.
Lock the door as well as the
vehicle.
• Always park in a well -lit
area.
• Never leave your vehicle
running while it's
unattended.
• Never leave valuable
objects in plain view.
• Never leave your car keys
in plain view.
South Bruce OPP officers
periodically check unat-
tended vehicles across the
detachment area. Typically,
officers find that one in
seven vehicles (14%) are left
unlocked.
Festive RIDE targeting both alchol and drug -impaired drivers
Huron Ontario Provincial
Police (OPP) is reporting
most drivers are keeping
things safe on the roads by
not driving after consuming
alcohol or drugs.
Huron OPP officers have
set up nearly 200 R.I.D.E
checkpoints throughout the
county during the Festive
R.I.D.E campaign. Out of the
thousands of drivers that
have entered the check-
points two have been
charged with Over 80/
Impaired offences and
another three have been
served with Warn Range
Suspensions.
Last year's campaign saw
19 drivers charged in Huron
County and another three
were served with a Warn
Range Suspension.
"Based on our R.I.D.E sta-
tistics to date, I can confi-
dently say most of the driv-
ers we talk to are thankfully
getting message," Huron
County OPP staff sergeant
Shawn Johnson. "They are
choosing to make a safe,
responsible and wise
decision to avoid consuming
alcohol or other drugs if they
are going to drive. We would
also like to thank the public
for their calls when they sus-
pect someone is driving
while impaired. Keeping our
roadways as safe as possible
is our goal and those calls do
play a key role in road
safety."
