Huron 4-H awards presented in Seaforth
Lorri Ann Moore
Huron County 4-H
The Huron County 4-H
Leaders' Association Awards
Program was held on the after-
noon of Sunday, Nov 22, 2015
at the Seaforth Agriplex.
In addition to the Awards
Program, 4-H was also cele-
brating 100 years in Ontario.
Green and white balloons,
a 4-H anniversary banner
and club displays decorated
the hall. Throughout the pro-
gram several draws for door
prizes were made for both
the young and young at
heart. A Silent Auction pro-
vided an opportunity for
attendees to do some early
Christmas shopping.
Attending the program were
parents, 4-H members,
volunteers, award sponsors
and presenters. Huron
County Warden Paul Gow-
ing and Lisa Thompson,
MPP attended and pre-
sented awards as well. We
appreciate the generosity
shown by both of them to
take time out of their busy
schedules to attend.
Many awards were pre-
sented -over 100, to 4-H
youth during this program.
Awards were presented for
showing animals, project
books, judging competition
and crop entries at the Sea -
forth Fair. Again this year, as
in years past, the 4-H pro-
gram would not be possible
without the assistance of
parents, 4-H volunteers and
all of those who sponsor the
program in so many ways.

Huron health unit urges rabies
vaccination to prevent fatal disease
The Huron County
Health Unit is reminding
residents to protect them-
selves, their dogs and their
cats against rabies, after
recent Ontario cases of the
fatal disease.
After four confirmed
raccoon rabies cases in
Hamilton, Ontario's first
raccoon rabies cases since
2005, it was found that two
unvaccinated dogs came
into contact with a rabid
raccoon.
Rabies is a disease spread
by the bite or scratch of an
infected animal. It attacks
the brain and spinal cord of
warm-blooded animals,
including humans. Once
symptoms appear, rabies is
almost always fatal.
"It's important for both
you and your pets to avoid
contact with wild animals,"
said public health inspec-
tor Patrick Landry. "Keep-
ing your cats and dogs on -
leash and supervised keeps
your pets from running
into wild animals. Rabies
vaccination is mandatory
for cats and dogs three
months of age and older, as
well as mandatory for
some classes of horses in
Huron County." Owners
can be fined if they do not
vaccinate their animals.
A bat in Huron County
tested positive for rabies in
2014. The animals most
likely to transmit rabies in
Huron County are bats,
skunks, raccoons, and foxes.
Landry reminds residents,
however, that any mammal
can transmit the disease if it
carries the virus.
Rabies is entirely preventa-
ble. You can reduce your
risk of rabies by.
• Avoiding contact with
unfamiliar domestic ani-
mals and all wild animals,
especiallywhen the animal
is ill, acting strangely or is
found dead.
• Avoiding feeding
unfamiliar domestic ani-
mals and all wild animals.
• Not allowing pets to run
loose outdoors.
• Keeping your pet's rabies
vaccination up-to-date.
If you or a family mem-
ber is bitten or scratched by
any animal, immediately
wash the wound well with
soap and water, and then
contact your doctor. The
incident must be reported
to the Health Unit for
investigation and assess-
ment of the risk for rabies.
Based on that assessment,
post -exposure rabies
prophylaxis maybe recom-
mended or the animal may
be observed for signs of the
disease.
If you see an animal,
especially a raccoon, acting
strangely, report it to your
local Animal Control ser-
vices or call the Ministry of
Natural Resources and For-
estry Rabies Hotline at
1-888-574-6656.
Shelby Barger receives the Hensall District Co-op Award,
Londesboro Branch, for the Top Novice Judge at the Huron County
Judging Competition. Holly Holyoake, Lucknow Beef Club leader
and Hensall Co-op representative presented the award.
