The Huron Shores Lions
Club has been granted a $7,000
bridge loan by Township of
Huron -Kinloss council.
Council made the deci-
sion to grant the club the
funds on Dec. 14, 2015, so it
can reserve the pyrotechnics
for its Point Clark Canada
Day fireworks fundraiser.
The service club's president
Brad Hand and treasurer John
Yungblut told council it
requires the financial backing,
and security, of the municipal-
ity to go forward with the Can-
ada Day festivities at Point
Clark. The event is the Lion's
most important fundraiser.
"We've never had to ask the
township before," Hand said.
"Our group's gotten smaller.
There was a bit of a loss last
year. We just don't have the

Dec. 8, 2015 a Huron County
OPP officer observed a GMC

bound on Base Line, speeding

The club is currently seeking
grants and courting corporate
sponsors. However, the pyro-
technics have to be reserved by
February at the latest, and the
club just doesn't have the
money, Hand said. Also, they
will only hear back about
about the grants a couple

rained out July 1 last year that
caused the club to come in at a
loss of $750, which then had to
be covered by money raised to
be donated, Hand said in a fol-
low-up telephone interview.

that we expect, and have a

money ... but if we're going to
go through with this, we're not
willing to risk money on it,"

The driver was stopped and
during the interaction with the
driver the officer noticed open
alcohol inside the vehicle. The
officer also had reasons to
believe the driver had con-
sumed some alcohol thus a
demand for the roadside
screening device was made.
Treasurer Yungblut said, elab-
orating that profits from the
fireworks go to help various
causes in the township.
Hand said much of the
money they make from the
July 1 event is from donations
collect on the beach, so the
best case scenario is they are
able to pay the municipality
back the following day.
If we have another rainy
day, if we don't get the grant,
we can't sustain that economic
environment," Yungblut said.
Councillor Jim Hanna com-
mended the group for its work,
but said he is unwilling to open
public coffers for the event.
"I think what you're doing is
wonderful. I'm not willing to
put taxpayers' money into.
That's me. The rest of council
can do what they like ... I'll be
willing to finance you, but with
no guarantee that you get to
keep the money:'
The driver complied with
the demand and provided a
sample of his breath, resulting
in a fail. He was placed under
arrest and transported to the
Huron OPP Detachment
where he provided two sam-
ples of his breath to a qualified
Intoxilizer Technician. Both
samples registered over the
legal limit.

Chamber addresses various issues during December meeting
The Lucknow Chamber of
Commerce touched on a
number of events during its
Dec. 8 general meeting.
Chair Paul Zinn advised the
paid -in -full membership
stands at 73 for 2015. The
annual fee for 2016 has been
set at $80, remaining
unchanged for several years
now.
Correspondence: A letter
was received from the Luc -
know
Strawberryfest Committee
requesting a donation in kind
of product, services or a mon-
etary donation to their June
24-26/16 Strawberry Summer -
fest. Kayla Howald motioned
that the COC donate $500
again as we have in past years,
with payment in January 2016.
Old Business: There was
general discussion about the
Dec. 5 COC Christmas Party
which had 161 guests in
attendance. This figure was
down from the previous two
years. An excellent meal was
served buffet style by Sepoy
Village Catering and the St.
Joseph's Kingsbridge Com-
munity entertainment was
much enjoyed. There were
draws for over 20 door prizes
followed by dancing to local
DJ, The Ace of Spades. How-
ever it was financially a loss
and was felt the COC should
look at a different format for
next year.
Impaired driver almost crashes into river
An impaired driver that
nearly took a splash in the Bay-
field River last week is facing a
number of charges after police
responded to a collision at the
Bayfield Marina & Harbour.
Just before 8 a.m. on Dec. 9,
2015 Huron County OPP
officers responded to the col-
lision scene located at the
Bayfield Marina.
Police arrived on scene to
find a GMC Acadia nearly
crashed into the river at the
north pier. The vehicle was
found to be stuck on a cement
post in a very precarious posi-
tion. Inside the vehicle, offic-
ers observed a male occupy-
ing the driver's seat sound
asleep. Officers were able to
rouse the male and safely get
the male out of the vehicle.
Upon speaking with the
driver officers noted the male
had been drinking alcohol
and also noticed he was dis-
playing several signs that his
ability to drive a motor vehicle
was impaired by alcohol. As a
result, the driver was arrested
for Impaired Care & Control.
He was subsequently trans-
ported to the Huron OPP
Detachment where he pro-
vided samples of his breath to
an Intoxilizer Technician.
Both of his tests registered
over the legal limit
