Wawanosh 4-H Pollinators
Meeting 3
Loretta Higgins
Meeting three of the Wawanosh
Pollinator Project was held at 7 p.m.
on August 4, 2015 at the Wingham
Community Garden. The meeting
started off with the club harvesting
various vegetables for the Wingham
Foodshare. Then Gayle opened the
meeting with the pledge and lead
Roll Call which asked members if
they have ever looked at an insect or
bird closely and what they noticed.
Next Justin of read the meeting two
minutes that he wrote. The last
piece of business was to decide on
our club name which will be the
"Proud Pollinators" with Amanda
designing the cover.
Members gave an update about
the pots they made last meeting
before talking about flower anatomy.
After learning the parts of the flowers
members tested their knowledge by
looking at flowers Mary Ellen had
brought. The bee waggle dance was
then played to represent what bees
do to communicate.
Next piece of reading was about
the pollination process that was
followed by the "No you can't take
me game': It challenged members
to know why different things were
important for pollination. Another
activity played was the humming-
bird hibernation game. It was simi-
lar to tag with the people "it" either
making the running hummingbirds
too cold or hungry that they had to
stop moving until rescued.
Members were then told to com-
plete the meeting 4 home activity
instead of Meeting 3. A volunteer
opportunity at a Dungannon supper
on November 27 for the club was
mentioned and most members
agreed to help. Achievement options
discussed were the judging competi-
tion or going to the Butterfly Conserv-
atory. Gayle closed the meeting with
the 4-H Motto. Meeting 4 is Thursday
August 6 at the Jefferson's at 7 p.m.

Blyth Festival Art Gallery
The Blyth Festival Art Gallery's
final exhibition of the 2015 season
honours a local artist, teacher and
supporter of the arts. He began cre-
ating art in high school and has
fond memories of bringing his
sketchbooks and art materials
along with him on wilderness
canoe trips with his father.
Greg Sherwood's interest in sci-
ence has shaped his life as an artist.
After leaving high school, he first
studied geology and received his
Bachelor degree. He returned to
university to study art and received
his Honours Bachelor of Fine Arts
degree and later his Bachelor of
Education. Those qualifications
have served him well as he worked
as a painter and educator in Huron
County for the last 27 years. His
paintings are in collections
throughout Canada and the US. He
recently retired from his position as
the well-respected Arts Depart-
ment head at F E Madill Secondary
School, in Wingham, where he cur-
rently resides with his wife.
His exhibition, entitled "A Trick
of the Light', is a collection of both
large- and small-scale oil paintings
of rugged landscapes, waterways
and sweeping skies from vistas in
Huron and Bruce Counties and the
Maritimes. A typical scene might
show a freshly harvested grain field
with large bales, an angry sky with
brooding clouds and a few cows
thrown in for good measure.
Sherwood offers this explanation
of the exhibition title. "'A Trick of
the Light' is a phrase that strikes
me as an apt description of what
UN a tree!

painting is. In many ways painters
deal in illusion, creating represen-
tations of the real world. When
done well, this illusion of reality
can often contain a truth that may
not be evident in the actual scene
being represented. Perhaps this is
the real "trick': "This show features
places that are important to me, in
particular those that speak to a
sense of place which goes beyond
geography."
The viewer is invited to think
about the interactions between
people and their environment and
the effects of the seasons on the
landscape. Come to the exhibition
and let Greg Sherwood's paintings
work their magic on you.
The show is curated by Vicki
McKague and Robert Tetu, and is
sponsored by Carol & Jerry
McDonnell and Ron & Bev Walker.
It can be viewed starting August 21
to September 12 in the Bainton
Gallery, in the Blyth Memorial Hall,
during Festival box office hours.
