Grey Bruce benefits from
smoke-free outdoor places
Grey Bruce

Submitted
This is the first summer
with the new rules under
the "Smoke -Free Ontario
Act" banning smoking on
restaurant patios, within 20
meters of municipal -owned
sports fields including spec-
tator areas and within 20
meters of all playgrounds.
The law helps protect chil-
dren and youth from expo-
sure to second-hand smoke
and assists to stop youth
from starting to use tobacco.
"Sports fields and play-
grounds are all about fresh air
and being healthy," says Emily
Gole, a youth soccer partici-
pant. "Smoke-free means
there is no second hand
smoke or cigarette butts. It's
better for everyone!'
"Children are more likely to
smoke if they see others smok-
ing,
moking, especially adults. These
smoke-free areas reduce chil-
dren's exposure to watching
adults smoke and reinforce
smoke-free as the norm." said
Alen Hawes, Tobacco Educa-
tion and Enforcement Officer
at the Grey Bruce Health Unit.
"For those trying to quit or who
have recently quit, smoke-free
areas help to reduce the trig-
gers that might lead to
smoking."
Tobacco use remains the
number one preventable
cause of death and disease
in Canada. Preventing youth
from starting to use tobacco
and assisting those who do
use it to quit are public
health priorities. For infor-
mation on the new regula-
tions, signage and enforce-
ment or quitting smoking,
call the Grey Bruce Health
Unit at 519-376-9420 or

St. Joseph's Community Kingsbridge Centre
Dear Editor,
As you may be aware St.
Joseph's Kingsbridge Com-
munity (SJKC) has success-
fully purchased the former
St Joseph's church and rec-
tory. During the last two
months a great deal of work
has been done by many vol-
unteers to complete
required renovations.
We are now thrilled to
announce the opening of St.
Joseph's Community, Kings-
bridge Centre on Saturday,
August 22 at 7:30p.m. Please
consider this your invitation
to the Grand Opening. There
will be a short program, fea-
turing the Kingsbridge Choir
and dignitaries. Refresh-
ments will be available and
future plans will be on
display.
The Kingsbridge Centre
will be a multi -use facility
and we anticipate the bene-
fits of this facility to be far
reaching. The hope is
to engage seniors, fami-
lies and youth and preserve
local history. This will
provide a venue for large
and small events such as
concerts, speakers, plays,
meetings, weddings and
memorials.
The project is an ambi-
tious one. With the energetic
involvement of our commu-
nity members, the enthusi-
astic support of our local
businesses, and the multi-
tude of grants available,
SJKC is very optimistic of
what the future holds.
