Canada 1 cna Member of the Canadian Community Newspaper Association and the Ontario Community Newspapers Association Val's Views Valerie Gillies Happenings and Events There is a lot of celebrating and some new beginnings in the area. This edition of the Sentinel is packed with photos to keep the memories alive. The biggest event over the Civic Holiday week- end eekend was, of course, the 2015 Ripley Reunion. Due to the early print deadline, the Ambassador Competition and Variety Night were the only things that could be included. Watch next week's edition for more coverage of the Reunion. Another large event was the Wingham Jets Rally that was held at the Richard W. LeVan Air- port in Wingham. This is the largest show of its kind in Canada and attracts some very serious remote control jet pilots. It was a beautiful weekend for flying and for the crowd to enjoy the expensive toys at their best during the air shows. The Lucknow Horticultural Society had a suc- cessful Flower Show and Tea. Although the attendance was down some due to people on vacation, the entries were spectacular. Be sure to watch for the new time for next year's show. It will be moved up to June to be able to take advantage of different plant species that will be in bloom. Son & Pop Auto Shop is off to a good start in Lucknow. We welcome the Jefferson families to the community and wish you success in your new venture. Congratulations are in order for the Wawanosh 4-H Lifeskills club for taking first place at the Huron County 4-H Go for the Gold competition. Lucknow native Dave Farrish also deserves congratulations on being named assistant coach to the Colorado Avalanche. The Lucknow Lions Club has also had a very successful year. The update report certainly shows that these dedicated volunteers are very busy, indeed. Personally, I will be taking a short holiday, so if you find me hard to track down in the next week, just know that I will be back on full duty very soon. I would like to take this opportunity to remind all that the Hometown Harvest insert will be com- ing out in early September. This is through the Lucknow Sentinel Office, as was the spring Farm Progress, and will be included in the Postmedia newspapers in Lucknow, Kincardine, Goderich, Seaforth, Clinton and Grand Bend. If you have submission or questions about editorial copy or photos (in .jpg format please) for the Hometown Harvest or the Sentinel please contact me directly at lucknow.editorial@sunmedia.ca. Submissions for the Hometown Harvest insert should be sub- mitted by August 20, if at all possible. www.lucknowsentinel.com Lucknow Fall Fair Facts Lucknow Agricultural Society Special categories for youngsters and teens Class 40 in the 2015 Lucknow Fall Fair book outlines categories for chil- dren 6 to 9 years, 10 to 13 years, and 14 to 18 years. Summer would be a great time to keep the younger chil- dren entertained by putting their cre- ative juices to work on a fair project(s). One that caught my attention was "Elf Yourself"- make a body of an elf out of construction paper, including a hat, using a photo of someone for the face. Now couldn't we have fun with that one! Or, how about, decorating a pump- kin for fall or Halloween, but no carv- ing allowed! What comes to mind when the cat- egory is to create a piece of art using only circles, of any size, any media, and any subject? All these ideas and more can be found on pages 72 to 75 in the fair book. This year's theme is Country Bumpkins, Harvest Pumpkins with fall fair days on Sept. 18, 19, 20. www. lucknowagso ciety. ca. Everyone loves a parade! Have you got your thinking caps on for this year's Lucknow Fall Fair, Sept. 18, 19, 20 and in particular for the parade on the 19th. In case you don't know it, the theme is "Country Bumpkins, Harvest Pumpkins": Once again, our local Kinette Club is the force behind organizing the local parade. The ladies donate a lot of volunteer hours to assist the Luc - know Fall Fair board with this huge part of the fair. Of course all entries are welcome; however, judging preference will be given to entries in keeping with the theme. There are 26 categories to enter and very good prize money in each! The parade starts at 11 a.m. at the corner of Campbell and Havelock Streets (the United Church corner). Please be at the appropriate starting point by 10 a.m. for judging. Entry forms and rules can be found at www.lucknowagsociety.ca or inside the fair book. Lucknow News Ruth Dobrensky Congratulations and happy 90th birthday to Warren Zinn who cele- brated with family and friends last Saturday afternoon. Late congratulations and best wishes to Lynn and Ron Nicholson on their 50th wedding anniversary. The Ripley Reunion began last Thursday and the fun, food, sports events, parade, dances, food, Elvis and ventriloquist shows, food, con- tests, races, theatre productions, food, and fireworks filled out the long weekend to the point of exhaustion. I hope that everyone who attended had a great time (and didn't eat too much) cramming in as many events as possible while catching up with all their friends and relatives. Starting tomorrow, if all goes as planned, I'll be away on another adventure with my great-nephew Nick, so there may not be a column for a few weeks. If I'm not able to get a column in, I should have a good long column when I get back, and will let you know how Nick and I got along. The reason I said "if all goes as planned", another great-nephew recently fell and broke his arm, spoil- ing some summer plans his mother had for him, so cross your fingers and hopefully you'll hear about our adventures in two weeks. In the meantime, hope you all have a good couple of weeks.
