Canaa'a C„ ,.., Member of the Canadian Community naNewspaper Association and the Ontario Community Newspapers Association Val's Views Valerie Gillies There is Tots going on Tis edition of the Lucknow Sentinel is certainly a mixed bag. There was so much material it would not all fit. That is actually a good problem for an editor to have, so keep those stories and photos coming. It seems like I have had my camera out of its case a lot more often lately. On Satur- day alone the UCW Spring Gathering and the Minor Hockey Awards had me clicking away. I still have two more photo spreads that would not even fit in last week or this week. I am hoping I can get them in over the next two weeks. It seems now that it is spring and everyone can get out and about things are becoming much more hectic. I am sure that it has been hectic for Joel Toner as he has been working at opening his new Stair and Railing business in Luc - know. Stop into Arise Stairs soon and let Toner know what you have planned for your next project. He will most certainly help you take your ideas and expand them to create amazing results. Another hockey story has been making the rounds, and for good reason. Congratula- tions to Bobby Raymond on his team's amazing win in Germany. It is stories like this that spark the desire in the minor hockey players and let the coaches know that they really are making differences in their player's lives. Sports can teach so much to help the youth as they go through life. Participation in sports is one of the rec- ommendations that Simone Bell made to help prevent youth from being victimized by human trafficking. Having youth engaged and involved in community, activities and hobbies is key to helping them become strong individuals with their own unique identity and sense of self worth. Prevention is the key, as it takes a very long time to help someone who has been victimized by this exploitive crime to, first of all, realize that they are victims of a real crime and not just alone in this, and to rehabilitate themselves to become their own person again. Agriculture and environment are in the news again as the Tommy Cooper Award was presented and Bruce Power has made a donation toward the SVGA Dam Project. There is lots going on and lots being cel- ebrated. What a wonderful place to be. Valerie Gillies Lucknow Sentinel Dungannon & St. Helen's News Shag Campbell On April 16 there were 10 happy folks for coffee in the morning and 8 competi- tive euchre players in the afternoon at the Dungannon Seniors Centre. Irene had high card with a 46. A few area folks attended the Sporting Goods Consignment Auction at Ron Snowden's on Saturday, April 18 at 9:30 am in St. Helen's. Lots of area neighbours are out rolling their lawns and cleaning up the winter debris. Some of the Amish farmers are already Lucknow News Ruth Dobrensky Happy 85th birthday to Henrica (Jur- jens) Vanderwel (formerly of Lucknow) who celebrated with family and friends this past Sunday in Stratford. Congratulations and a late happy 85th birthday to D.A. Hackett, we wish you many more. Best wishes and congratulations to Ann and Andy Groenveld who will be celebrat- ing their 60th wedding anniversary this coming Saturday at RVilla in Ripley. I noted with interest Valerie's little arti- cle about thefts in Lucknow, mainly gar- dening tools and lawn ornaments. It seems to me that this is an annual occur- rence. A few years ago, a pick-up truck came into the parking lot of the apartment building where I live and stole a number of potted plants. We have video surveil- lance but we couldn't get a license plate number off the truck. The strange thing about that particular theft (there were others) was that a few days later, one of our tenants saw the plants for sale down planting spring grain. The Dungannon Seniors had their pot luck dinner on April 15 with 27 in attend- ance. After a delicious meal they were entertained with old-time music played by Marvin Scott and Arnold Bruce on violins, Annie Pritchard on organ and Don Nicholson on guitar. The next pot luck dinner will be June 17th. Come and have a great evening out with friends. Have any news? Call Shag Campbell at 519-529-7734. at the beach. It seems this is quite a racket in the area, so as Val advised in her little story, don't leave your tools etc. lying about and put a guard on your gnomes. I congratulate the Angst family on host- ing the Dairy Education Day for the stu- dents of Brookside Public School. I wish there had been programs such as these when I was teaching Sunday School in Toronto. It was difficult to explain to some of those born and raised city kids that all their food came from a farm and that without farmers they wouldn't have any- thing to eat or they'd have to grow or raise and kill their own food. They had the same idea about helping people in coun- tries where there were droughts or fam- ines, they couldn't understand why the people just didn't go to the supermarket and buy what they needed. Just when I had fallen into the spring is really here trap, we had snow again, how frustrating! Sympathy of the community to the family of Albert Bochert, 95, Seaforth. Purple Grove News Purple Grove WI Congratulations to Gabrielle and Greg Smith on the birth of their son Benjamin Peter. A first grandson for Heather and Sam Finnie and first great-grandchild for Irene Boyle of Walkerton. The John Farrell family gathered for a surprise birthday party for Tania Lise last weekend. A good time was had by all. Sincere sympathy is sent to all the McE- wan family on the death of Joyce (Arnold) McEwan. An interesting note - three folks who had their roots on the Boundary passed away recently - Joyce, Merle (Dore) Rhody, and Ron Harkness. Their fami- lies are in our thoughts and prayers. Thanks to all the folks who were able to help out at the Spring Cleaning Bee at the Community Centre. It looks much better now. The folks from the area who were able to attend the Right to Life banquet in Underwood on April 16 appreciated the guest speaker. His topic was on euthana- sia and he presented some startling facts on the abuses that are happening in the world. We need to become more aware of what is happening with that debate.
