Canada Poch Member of the Canadian Community Newspaper Association and the Ontario Community Newspapers Association Val's Views Valerie Gillies Culture in the Country This edition of the Lucknow Sentinel is packed with local cultural productions and news. The HAWK Theatre held its Media Night to reveal the exciting presentation "A Small Town Homecoming': This accomplished troupe is ready to tickle your funny bone and appeal to your rural heart. Another production by the HAWK Theatre is scheduled to run during the Ripley Reunion. Both "A Small Town Homecoming" and "Railways to Ripley" are original locally written plays. HAWK -Theatre is to be commended for rising to the chal- lenge of two offerings in the same year. Almost Famous Players has announced their per- formances for the 2015 year. It should prove to be an uplifting show with the theme "Because I'm Happy': Ripley Reunion planning and preparation is well underway. A report was made to Huron -Kinloss Council. The Reunion website will soon be updated with more information, as well as forms to become involved in the many activities. The grade 5/6 students at Lucknow Central Pub- lic School participated in a unique activity to learn about the cultures of immigrants to Canada. Cindy Black discovered a school in Hamilton with a large number of immigrant students and arranged to have the schools participate in a Skype call. Schools have most certainly become a culture of using the new technologies to expand student horizons far beyond what was possible in classrooms in the past. The ladies of Purple Grove Women's Institute are shining examples of the culture of volunteerism. When asked if it would be possible to interview the members who had received their Volunteer Awards in Stratford recently, I was invited to arrive before their regular meeting to take photos and chat. As all in the group are volunteers, the discussion was opened up to include all present. It was quite the lively chat with many memories being shared. This is obviously a very close-knit community with a long history, much as was explored in the HAWK Theatre play about small rural communities, which brings this column full circle. I feel blessed to be able to live in a rural area where people and culture are nurtured. I thor- oughly enjoy the privilege of being able to cover these wonderful stories and cultural activities for the Lucknow Sentinel. Please be sure to inform me of your event or news to allow me to share with our readers. Information and photos can be submitted to lucknow.editorial@sunmedia.ca or dropped in to the office. Valerie Gillies Dungannon & St. Helen's News Shag Campbell April 2 saw 12 jolly folks for cof- fee in the morning at the Dun- gannon Senior Centre but only 8 for euchre in the afternoon. I am sure there are other card players out there who are missing out on the fun. Judy won with a high card of 55. Welcome back to Barbara and George Smyth from the sunny south. Hope you had a great winter. Rev. Allan Falconer and Lay Reader Joan Campbell led the Good Friday service at Christ Church with 46 present. This was a combined service with St. George's of Goderich. I understand there were quite a few children at the Easter egg hunt at the Dungannon Park on Easter Sunday. Ron Brindley was spotted driv- ing around town on Good Friday in his old Ford truck. Joan Campbell was one of the readers for "The Way of the Cross" on Good Friday. She was joined by folks from many area churches in walking around the square in Goderich stopping to remember the 14 stops that Christ made on his way to the cross. I spotted a few area folks watching the first salt ship of the season, the Captain Henry Jack- man arrived in the Goderich har- bour to start the shipping season. Got some news? Call Shag at 519-529-7734. Lucknow News Ruth Dobrensky Happy late 74th birthday to Fraser Downey who celebrated with family and friends on Easter Sunday. This past Saturday, the Legion held their annual dinner honour- ing local veterans and their spouses, and veterans widows. As always, the dinner was delicious and all those who attended enjoyed themselves. Last week, former members of St. Peter's Anglican Church got together for an Easter Eucharist Service at the Rivervalley apartments. I (like many others) have been trying to avoid all the potholes on our streets. Some of our side streets are so bad that the entire street is like one huge pothole. I seem to remember that the street I live on was supposed to be repaved (I think in 2010) and it still hasn't been done, but, it isn't nearly as bad as Outram or Willoughby to name just two. I did notice however, that the last time I drove through Ripley, I didn't notice any potholes, at least none compared to those in Lucknow. Am I the only person who has noticed this? I don't think so! One positive thing I have noticed is that the rains we've been having are doing a great job of cleaning away the dirt and grime that was under the snow, and, have been helping green up things so that it actually does look like spring is really here. Give us a few more weeks and hopefully we'll be wearing shorts and sandals, although I have seen a few people (and kids) out in shorts and no coats, even in cold weather. Hope they didn't get sick!
