Staffa women offered pot pourri of readings

When the United Church Women
met, November 14, they opened
with a programme led by Gwen
Christie.
She offered a pot pourri of
readings, "Shopping I, Must Go",
"Opportunity Knocks", "Nine Fruits
of the Spirit", "Trees", a wonder of
life and The ancient, friendly, faith-
ful tree. She concluded with
"Autumn from New Zealand" and
"You are a child of the Universe",
be cheerful and strive to be happy.

Ada Pethick chaired the business.
At this time donations were made
to the Stratford Food Link and the
Francis Sandy Native Training
Centre. It was reported that
Campbells' Soup Labels have
power to help people.
Donations to the project "Seeds
for Africa" were received and amy
still be sent. The ladies of the
church will assist with the church
service November 25, when a Food
Link speaker will be present. Plans
were made for that event.

Tweedsmiur Books on Wednesday
evening, November 28, in the
township hall, when the Staffa
Women's Institute met for their
Scrapbook and Tweedsmiur History
night.
Esther Smale presided, opening
with the Institute Ode, Mary
Stewart Collect and a poem, "Come
Walk with me". After welcoming
everyone, Esther called on the
Stelffa #1, 4-H club tp tell about
heir course, Fitness and Health,
which they had just completed and
which was led by Doris Jeffery and
Freda Kerslake. The girls had
posters on the wall and their books
on display. Larry Jo Gardiner
introduced the girls present and
they entertained everyone with a
skit on fitness.
Melissa Dearing and Carrah
Templeman's history project on
Staffa was also on display. The
girls placed first at Upper Thames
with their project and will be com-
peting in the county in the spring.
BUSINESS
Many interesting superstitions and
sayings were revealed when the roll
call was answered by members and
visitors.
The president, Joyce Vivian
presided for the business, when
letters were read from Anne Marie
Allen and the Children's Aid. Lil-
lian Douglas and Roberta
Templeman reported on the
workshop on Forms, Facts and
Figures which they had attended at
Centralia College and Roberta also
reported on the recent district
executive banquet which she and
Joyce Vivan had attended.
A letter and calendar from the
Weavering Womens Institute in
Kent, England was on display and a
Christmas card was signed by all,
to be sent to England. Esther closed
the meeting with a poem, Older
Folks, and everyone sang 0 Canada
and said the W.I grace. During
refreshments served by Esther and
Grace Kerslake, everyone enjoyed
looking through the history and
scrap books.
Sympathy is extended to Bill and
Freda Kerslake and family on the
death of their Mother and
Grandmother, Janet Elizabeth
Kerslake.
St. Nicholas visits family Christmas party

Approximately 100 people en-
joyed an afternoon of fun at the
first annual St. Nicholas Family
Christmas Party on Sunday, Decem-
ber 2 in the St. Columban Parish
Hall. An animated video "Nicholas,
The Boy Who Became Santa" was
shown followed by dancing to the
music provided by Terry Kelly of
Prime DJ. services. A special
thanks to Terry for donating his
services.
St. Nicholas arrived at this time
and handed out coloring books and
candy canes to the children. The
day concluded with supper served
by the ladies in charge.

returned home last week from a
holiday in Florida.
Paul and Margaret Ford and Cas-
sandra of Stratford and Private Joe
Ryan of Camp Borden visited on
the weekend with Ron and Mary
R 'an and family.
Jordon and Kathryn Moylan,
Aiigus and Fiona of St. Marys
visited with Mary Moylan on Sun-
day and attended the St. Nicholas
party at the church hall.
John and Mary Jo Nelson of
Lucknow and Sister Margaret Eck-
ert of Strathroy and Cecilia Ryan
were guests of J.D. and Marg
MacRae of London and attended
mass and the administration of the
sacrament of confirmation at St.
Pius Church, London. Ian MacRae
was one of the candidates con-
firmed.
Catherine Melady, Colleen
Kerslake, Mamie Delaney, Connie
Murray, Helen Nolan, Joan Murray
and Katie Murray attended a bridal
shower for Lisa Murray in Waterloo
on Sunday, December 2. Lisa is the
daughter of Cyril and Rose Marie
Murray and will marry Todd Morey
on January 12, 1991.
Sympathy of the community is
extended to Father Joe Hardy on
the death of his uncle in England.
Father Hardy is attending the
funeral of his uncle in England.
