The Seatorth Business Improvement Assoaabon was formed 10 years ago, when a group of farsighted Seaforth business people realized that the downtown businesses needed to be united in some way. A municipally legis- lated Business Improvement Area was the vehicle chosen (roughly mainstreet south and a couple of blocks each way on *8). It is a little different from other volunteer groups in that there is fixed income from a tax on members in the designated area. The first few years were a learning process. Trial and error proved that help was needed. To that end, Seaforth joined the Mainstreet Canada program, and have since employed a part time paid staff person There was always a solid nucleus of members willing to help, some who are happy to follow along. and a committed few who have worked hard to improve Seaforth's business area and Seaforth itself. 1 believe, and I'm sure our committed nucleus does also, that if you don't have a strong, viable, business area that is united and community oriented, you won't have a strong viable community'. To this end the B.I.A. will continue work promoting the town of Seaforth and its businesses as well as educating Seaforth area shoppers to patronize their hometown businesses. "Volunteer of the Month" Project is sponsored by: The Seaforth Recreation and Parks Committee. The fitness coolie's grand opening will be Declrrbcr 17, but it is open now Io sell dub manbersltips. Owner of the new fitness ciente, Doug Shar- man of Dublin, has already had kits of experience working on bodies, ldespite his incredibly young alae of This is Doug's second fitness came, the first une ui St. Marys. Doug began that when he was m Grade 10 with this hale of the SL Marys LLions Club and his father. The fitness centre w St. Marys is owned and operated by the Lions Club now. Obviously, Doug has been interested in this body building stuff for some time. He got hold of some weights and began power lifting when he was 12 -years -old. Doig sent away for a membership to the Canadian Power Lifting Union, which allowed him to compete. Doug entered his first competition when he was 13 -years -old That same year he joined Gold's Gym in London, their youngest yet member. A neighbour of Doug's belonged to the club and took Doug along. They became training partners, and in no time Doug was winning trophies and had won more trophies than anyone else in the gym. He contributes these early achievements to his having dedication. In the past six months Doug hasn't had much opportunity to work out. He lives at home with his father and helps work the family's 147 acre farm. When he isn't far- ming he's been busy working on the new centre. Once Doug's Body Shop is finished and operating Doug will get back into weight lifting. "If you have dedication, then it's there," said Doug. "I had it, and I still do." Last year Doug finished high school and plans on going to the Ontario Police Academy in Aylmer. He's been accepted into the academy, but has to wait until September 1992, just so he'll be a little older. Doug would like to be an OPP officer. Some of his friends are policemen. In fact, two of Doug's policemen friends from the Mitchell police force have bought memberships at his fitness centre. The police forces of Mitchell and Seaforth have been approached by Doug with offers of special memberships at the new Seaforth centre. Being so young does make business a little difficult for Doug. SIGN SAYS IT ALL - Doug Sharman shows the sign he designed for his new fitness centre opening very soon in Seaforth. The body builder plans to give clients personal instruction. Oxford photo. Banks haven't been overly respon- sive to him, so he's gone the route of government loans to young business people. Along with his own money and some from private investors Doug has bought 525,000 in equipment for the fitness centre. He has 15 stations with free weights, some Nautilus and univer- sal weight machines. Within the next six months he hopes to have a hot tub and whirlpool bath installed and next year he'd like to install a sauna. To start off there will be showers and hair dryer outlets in the changerooms/washrooms. Each also has full length mirrors and full size benches to assist people get dressed, which is especially helpful if the person wants to work out before going to work. The back door of Doug's Body Shop is wheelchair accessible. Parking is available at the back of the building and out on the street. Other features at Doug's Body Shop will be the clothing counter and refreshment centre. Fitness clothing will include tee-shirts, sweat shirts and pants, tank tops and women's spandex aerobic out- fits. The refreshment centre will sell gatorade, juices, vitamins and nutrition supplements loaded with protein. Instructors and aerobic teachers haven't been hired yet for the centre, but Doug has his mind set on a few candidates who have completed either aerobics instructor or fitness instructor programs at community colleges. After eight years in bodybuilding and the business Doug is certainly qualified to instruct at the fitness centre. He belongs to the Forest City power lifting team, London, and recently the team travelled to competitions in Luxembourg. He would like to start a power lifting team in Seaforth. While Doug was operating the St. Marys club he saw how fitness can benefit people. He had clients referred to him by doctors from the hospital in St. Marys. Doctors would supply him with a client's case history and recommendations, thus enabling him to draw up a personalized fitness program for the client. In St. Marys Doug once worked, with very good results, with a man who had shattered his thigh in a car accident. Weight lifting and other general exercise increased blood circulation and helped speed up the healing process. Vitamins and cal- cium supplements also greatly helped by contributing to the rebuil- ding of bone. Doug gave the client stress tests and reported monthly to the client's doctor and the doctor did check up work. The doctor told Doug he concluded the client healed better with the fitness than he would have with a cast. The client continued to lift weights and can lift 500 pounds. In Seaforth Doug plans on having special aerobics classes for seniors that would include personalized instruction. Doug points out it's been proven exercise can improve blood circulation, decrease blood pressure, and reduce the risk of heart disease. Another reason why it's good for a senior to be in shape is that it improves the posture. Aerobics classes will be commen- cing around the time of the grand opening, and it will be possible to sign up for aerobics classes only. As of yet there are no schedules for aerobics classes and the schedule will depend on community response. Doug's Body Shop is offering a fitness package to every type of person in Seaforth. The special prices for opening memberships are: $300 for the first year for an adult (18 -years -old and over); $265 for students; and $275 for seniors (50 -years -old and over). All specials include full use of the facilities, free personalized instruc- tion and free `Doug's Body Shop' tee-shirt.
