tric light, telephone and street railway
systems, which netted last year a profit
of $3,145 and enabled the council to re-

A bill poster was in Minto the other
day advertising an excursion to the Tor-
rey -Alexander meetings at Toronto, and

periment this sntnumer of a transcontin-

elude House of Refuge books and ac-
counts, $55; members of the Board of
Audit, $4 per day ; School Inspector, $5
per ecbool up to 120 schools, and each
school over 50, .$1.50 per school, up to
120 schools, travelling expenses $150;
warden ;140; gaol surgeon, X75; surgeon
House of Refuge, $150; keeper House of
Refuge, $330, and Matron $275.

people lost their lives, yet more than five
times this number or over 3,000 people
died from pneumonia in Chicago during
the same year, with scarcely a passing
notice. Every one of these cases of pneu-
monia resulted from a cold, and could
have been prevented by the timely use

For some time past it has been known
to a few that among the inmates of the
House of Refuge were several who own
property worth about $3500 of which
they retained possession. Inspector Tor-
rance brought the matter to the h atten-
tion of
0 the county council which appoint-

Warden Spackillau and Messrs Mackenz-
ie, Ferris and McQuillan, to deal with
the matter. This committee, accom-
panied by W. Lane and G, F. Blair vis-
ited the House on Wednesday last, when
three inmates transferred to the county
$550, $150 and $550, respectively. A
fourth, who has about $1,000 in cash and
securities, refused at the last minute to
do so and there are others who have
smaller amonnts. Action on these cases
was deferred until a delegation waits up.

According to a report made by the
keeper of the House of Refuge at Walk-
erton, to the County Council, there were
at the end of the year 51 inmates in the
institution -37 males Dud 14 females, At
last report there were 48. There wore
admitted daring 1905, 16, Six died in
the House during the year, 3 absconded
and 4 were discharged. Of the 16 re-
ceived during the year the townships
furnished 12 and the towns and villages
4. They came as follows: from Albe-
marle 1, Atuabel 1, Brant 1, Carrick 2,
Culross 3, Eastnor 1, Elderslie 2, Kinlcss
1, Tara 0, Tiverton 1, Kincardine 1. The
unfortunate condition of these was as-
cribed to th3 following causes: Siokuess
7, destitution 5, lame 1, old age 3. Tho
total expenditure for support of inmates
of the House was $3440,84, the amount
produce sold $234,34, other revenue
$240 50. The average expense per week
for each person $1.16.

On Friday of last week, Richard Mor-
row, a well known esilent of Huron,
passed to his rest at the advanced age of
85 years and 11 months. The old patri-
arch died from old age, no doubt accel-
erated by the death of his life long part-
ner some three months since. He was
born iu county Cavan, Ireland, in 1S20,
and carne to Lower Canada in 1522, with
his parents, who settled in that province,
near Montreal, where they lived t111 1858,
when a move was made to Upper Cana-
da, Mr. and Mrs. Morrow and family set-
tling on the Goshen line iu Stanley.
After a residence of eight years in Stan-
ley, they moved to Colborne, near Nile,
and lived on the homestead for nearly
35 years Some few years since tbey
moved to town, and quite recently the
gentleman resided with his daughter at
Dungannon, and it was there the death
call came.
