Atom Is finalists in Harriston tournament
The Seaforth Atom 1 hockey team
travelled to Harriston this weekend
for its first tournament.
The first game was on Friday
night against Walkerton. Mark Van
Dooren scored the opening goal
early in the fust period, assisted by
Scott Van Dooren and Scott
Henderson. Walkerton tied the
game at one apiece but 50 seconds
before the end of the period, there
was a scramble in front of the net
and Mark Van Dooren found the
empty side. Scott Henderson earned
the assist.
There was no scoring in the
second period but the third period
belonged to Seaforth. Robbie Craig
passed the puck to Derek Smith as
he stepped off the bench. He let a
hard shot go from the hash marks
to give the team goal number three.
With only a minute to play in the
game, Josh Dietz gave Mark Van
Dooren the puck. He netted an
insurance goal on a screen shot that
went through the goalie's legs
without him even moving. The final
score was 4 - 1.
The next game was scheduled for
24 hours later - Saturday 8 p.m.
Once again the boys were up
against a team they knew nothing
about. Seaforth opened the scoring
on a scramble in front of the net.
Scott Van Dorren flipped in when
the goalie was down. Scott Hender-
son and Mark Van Dooren got the
assists. Before the end of the first,
Alliston had tied the score at one
apiece.
Alliston took the lead with a goal
early in the second period. Only 30
seconds later, Seaforth tied the
game at 2 - 2. Mark Van Dooren
carried the puck from the red line,
being hooked all the way, but
managed to get a hard shot away
and it found its mark over the
goalie's right shoulder. This time it
was Seaforth's turn to take the lead.
The team was on a power play.
Brandon Nash passed the puck out
from behind the net to Derek Smith
in the slot. He lost no time putting
it in the net. Exactly one minute
later, Alliston tied the game at 3 -
3. It was only the end of the second
period.
In the third period, Seaforth final-
ly took control and scored four
more goals to Alliston's one.
Scoring the goals were Mark Van
Dooren (2), Scott Van Dooren, and
Brandon Nash. Earning assists were
Jeremey McNichol, Mark Van
Dooren, Bruce Griffin, Scott
Henderson, and Derek Smith. The
final score was Seaforth 7 and
Alliston 4.
Winning the first two scheduled
games guaranteed Seaforth a spot in
one of the two semi-final games on
Sunday afternoon. This time the
team they were to fight for the right
to play in the championship game
was Kincardine. They had also won
their first two games. Little did the
team know that it was going to be
such a hard fight!
Kincardine started the scoring
midway through the first period.
Scou Van Dooren, assisted by PaL
Coyne, tied the score, Only 12
seconds later, Kincardine scored
again, taking a 3 - 1 lead with only
13 seconds left in the second
period.
The Seaforth boys knew they only
had 10 minutes to tie the game.
Scott Van Dooren let a had shot go
form the hash marks and it found
the mark. Assists went to Mark Van
Dooren, and Scou Henderson. Near
the middle of the period, Jeremey
McNichol took a shot from the
point, Mark Van Dooren picked up
the rebound and spotted Braddon
Nash standing unprotected at the far
corner of the net. Mark sent the
puck straight to him and Brandon
one -timed it past the goal -tender.
At the end of regular time, the
score was Seaforth 3 and Kincar-
dine 3. The rules for the sudden
death overtime were three skaters a
side for a two minute period with
player change allowed only on the
fly. The coach sent out Mark Van
Dooren, Brandon Nash, and Jered
Munro. When Brandon got tired,
Scott Van Dooren replaced him and
when Jered got tired, Jeremey
McNichol replaced him. There was
no scoring. The next overtime
period was to be played with two
skaters each for a one minute
period. This time the coach sent out
Brandon Nash and Bruce Griffin.
When Brandon tired, Mark Van
Dooren replaced him. With only
nine seconds left in the one minute
overtime, Mark Van Dooren had a
breakaway and whipped it over the
goalie's left shoulder.
The final score was Seaforth 4

The boys had played a long,
strenuous game and had only one
hour to rest before the champion-
ship game against Durham. Seaforth
started the scoring with Derek
Smith slapped home the first goal.
Jeremey McNichol and Mark Van
Door= got the assists. Durham tied
the game in the second period and
got the go ahead goal in the middle
of the third. Although the Seaforth
boys were straining for each stride
they took, they didn't give up.
Midway through the last period
there was a scramble in front of the
net. Robbie Craig picked up Bran-
don Nash's rebound and stuffed it
in. With 2 minutes left in the game,
the winning goal was scored while
Seaforth was short-handed. A hard
shot deflected off a stick and got
past goalie Charles Robertson
without him having time to move.
After late games Friday and
Saturday night, as well as two
games on Sunday, the boys were
exhusted and had nothing left to
give. Durham scored an insurance
goal twelve seconds later and won
the championship. The final score
was Durham 4 and Seaforth 2.
The whole team deserves credit
for a great weekend of hockey -
especially goaltenders Charles
Robertson and Sean Ludwig, who
came up with many great saves to
keep the team in the games. Each
member of the team was presented
with a plaque for being finalists in
