PTE. ARTHUR PRAISER, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Grant Praiser, was
killed in action on July 8, 1944.
Pte. Praiser cnha od with the Elgin
Regiment in October 1941, and was
transferred to Divisional Head-
quarters of the 4th Division, and
later to the Highland Light Infantry
of Canada. He wait overseas m
1942. He was born in Seaforth and
received his education
here as well
Well represented
The Town of Seaforth was well
represented on the war front on
three Separate occasions this cen-
ury.
During World War I ap-
proximately 142 joined the service,
with 36 of that group not returning.
In World War II approximately
350 men and women joined the
service. Twenty did not return.
For the Korea conflict 12 joined
the service. There were no casual-
ties.
Three local veterans of World
War I - Paul Doig, Dave Netzke,
and Harry Palin, are still living
today. Two of them, Mr. Doig and
Mr. Netzke, are also veterans of
World War II. Mr. Doig served int
he army in World War I, then
served on ground duty in the air
force in World War II. Mr. Netzke
also served in the army in World
War I, and in World War II served
as a guard at a Prisoner of War
camp.
Aother local man to serve in
both World Wars was Dr. J.A.
Munn, now deceased. In World
War I Dr. Munn was a bomber
pilot. In World War Il, because he
was too old to fly, he became a
flight instructor.
Kenny Bennett, deceased, also
served in both world wars as well.
In World War I he served in the
army and in World War II was in
the postal corps.
Each and every veteran has a
story of his own - living or dead.
And one in particular is Seaforth
native Frank Devereaux - a bomber
pilot shot down over Belgium in
World War II. The farmer who
found Frank Devereaux buried him
in a nearby church cemetery, then
took a piece of the plane's
windshield and carved it into a
cross. The farmer's wife wore that
cross throughout the war.
When the war was over, and the
Graves Commission found Mr.
Devereaux's grave, the farmer
found out the young pilot's Seaforth
address, and sent the cross and a
photograh of the grave site, to his
mother.
These like many other stories are
on display in the Seaforth Legion,
and may be viewed by the public
anytime.
Those who died
There were 20 Seaforth soldiers
killed in World War II.
They were: Arnold Archibald,
James Broadfoot, Arthur Fraiser,
Van Bell, Harold Chesney, Frank
Casson, Frank Devereaux, William
Greig, William Graham, Hector
Lamont, John Millar, Howard
McTavish, Harry McIver, John
McSpadden, Robert McCallum,

O'Reilly, Frederick O'Leary, Robert
Papple and Melville Shannon.
Photographs are not available for
all of these soldiers. Anyone who
has a photograph is asked to please
forward it to the Legion or Frank
Philips, so it can be included in the
Legion's picture albums.
Speak not of battles

IN FLANDERS FIELDS
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our places; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below
We are the Dead, Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
