Cat, and family inspire woman to pen book
s Y HEATH= ft MENET
A family pot was the
umparaovn behind a chikkaa' s
book written by formai Seaforth
maidew, Nancy Scott -Ansley.
Using her 16 -year-old cat Jobst
as her central figure. and the rest
of her family a:cart,
Nancy penned a boat that
delivers the age-old mesa., "it
doesn't flimsier what you look
like, u's what's inside that
counts".
I temanbered the books five
when 1 was a child - they all
moaned to have a moral, and 1
thought I'd love to write that
kind of book," conunaiwd Nan-
cy, adding she found her cat
John the perfect vehicle for
doing so.
"Everyone was always com-
menting on how fat John was, or
that we should put him on a diet,
and 1 thought, hey, I can do
something with that. And with
the kids off to school, 1 was able
to," she recalled.
So three years ago she wrote
"Put that fat cat on a diet!"
It's a story about a cat unlike
any other - a cat who doesn't
like to hunt or play or clean
himself like other cats. But he
does like to eat almost anything.
The problem arises when
John's family decides to reform
him, and he leaves home in
search of someone who will like
him just as he is. At first,
everything goes well, but after a
while John begins to wonder if
he's made a big mistake... and
so does John's family.
Seeing the book to print, has
been a long process for Nancy,
but one she hasn't regretted.
"It's great. It really is nice to
see your work in print, and
know you had the perseverance
to see your way through and

stick with it," she said.
"And it's been such a learning
experience. I think if I had ever
known how difficult it was going
to be I'd have never attempted
it. I was so naive, but it's been a
very rewarding experience."
Although it's been two years
since Nancy negotiated a
contract with Penguin books, her
boot was only Mewed two
weeks alio, held up by the
regular red tape of publahing.
Prior to priming the book hod to

And in her spare bine, Nancy
is working on a second book,
one she calls a "prequel. not a
sequel" to "Put that fat cat on a
diet". It will explain John's very
interesting origins. More John
stories are also on the story
board.
"Each of these John stories
will have a moral," said Nancy.
adding they are inspired in great
part by her own children.
"There'll be John stones
forever."

Scou of Goderich Street West in

teacher, she attended the
Seaforth District High School,
graduated from the University of
