(7) and ended up in the net as Mitchell blanked the hometown Centenaires 5-0 Friday night in Westem Junior D Hockey League action. Bader photo. Centenaires lack snap, crackle, pop The Seaforth Centenaires got a point but lost the game Sunday afternoon at the arena, 8 - 6 in overtime to Alvinston's Flyers. The ending wasn't the best, but it was a far better game and effort than the 5 - 0 loss to the Mitchell Hawks at the arena Friday. The disappointing homestand leaves the Centenaires with five points after seven games from a win, two ties and three losses, including Sunday's in OT. A full five-minute stop -time overtime is a new wrinkle in the Ontario Hockey Association Western Junior D League this season, and the over- time loser gets a point. Seaforth is in a two-way tie for seventh place in what looks like what is going to be a well balanced league this season, one point away from the basement and four points out of first place. The local juniors are on the road to Mitchell this Friday night for an 8:30 game, and return to the Seaforth and District Community Centres Sunday afternoon at 1:30 when Belmont is in town. Kevin McLlwain's goal with slightly more than a minute left in regulation time got the local fans jumping up and down and sent the Centenaires into overtime Sunday, where Dennis Meston fired the winner past Bill Tremeer about half -way through the five minutes. The Flyers flipped the insurance goal into an empty net with 43 seconds left. Seaforth fell behind 3 - 0 early in this game, in the same kind of trance they were in Friday, but came rapping back to equalize with help from a pair of powerplay goals by the end of the first period. It was 6 - 5 for Alvinston after the second 20 minutes. Six Centenaires shared lamplighting duties: Ted Sills, Kory Dietz, Blair Beuremann, Jason Carter, David Williams and Kevin. Beuermann also got a pair of as- sists, as did Paul McLlwain. Jason Schoonderwoerd helped set up three goals, and Karsten Carroll and Jeff Gemmell each had one assist. Referee Tom Blake gave Alvinston eight minor penalties and Seaforth had seven. Seaforth had far less snap, crackle and pop Friday night, as the older and stronger Hawks got down to brass tacks from the opening whistle and beat the Centenaires to the puck all night.. Trevor Harmer scored twice for Mitchell, and Steve Eidt, Mark Ulch and Rob Boville each found the mark once, behind Centenaires' goalie Dana Duskocy. Seaforth came close a couple of times, but it wasn't enough to write home about and they rarely tested Steve Soedcr, who got the shutout. The Hawks led 2 - 0 after the first period, and 3 - 0 after the second. Referee Pete Chisholm gave Mitchell four minors and a high sticking major Seaforth had five minors. Hot Stove League: Karsten Car- roll, Deitz and Jason McNichol are the team's early point scoring leaders, each with five. McNichol is no longer with the team... The Centenaires are still waiting to hear back from the Western Ontario Athletic Association on their appeal to have Shawn Jacklin released from the Brussels minor hockey system. Jacklin, a defenceman who could really help the Centenaires, has three years experience with the Brussels midgets but wants to play junior this year. Brussels feels it would wreck their midget team. Meanwhile he comes to every game in civilian clothes, and continues to skate with the Centenaires in prac- tice and Wingham's high school team.... All Centenaires players, management and fans are invited to Mitchell's "Meet the Team" and Fan Appreciation Party for some fun, food and refreshments fol- lowing Friday night's tilt in Mitchell. There is no admission cost. Sounds like a deal to me....Belmont and the Centenaires tied 1 - 1 in their only meeting this season. OCTOBER t4 tvek.i LTHIS WEEK IN Atoms win regular season game against Clinton, but lose exhibition to Harriston The Atom 1 hockey team played us first regular season game un Saturday when Clinton came to town. Seaforth won the contest 6 - 1 Only one goal was scored in the opening period. Brandon Nash's shot hit the post and deflected ted into the net. Clinton tied the game early in the second but 24 seconds later Seaforth had the lead again. Scott Van Dooren took the puck into the Clinton end. When he got to the face off circle he noticed that Mark Van Dooren was standing along in front of the net. He made a beautiful pass onto Mark's stick and Mark flipped it upstairs. The next grail was set up by the Van Ductal duo. Scott passed to Mark who took the shot, picked up his own rebound, skated around the net and then peed the puck out front to Scott Henderson who popped it in. The third period was also produc- tive for the Seaforth boys. Derek Smith scored with a hard wrist shot after Pat Coyne gave him the puck. Then Scott Henderson passed the puck up to Mark Van Dooren who took a shot. Scott Van Dooren picked up the rebound and had no trouble putting it over the sprawling goalie. Clinton didn't give up and with only 42 seconds to play Chad Chipchase scored Clinton's second goal of the game. Seaforth couldn't let them nave me last woru so with 23 seconds left in the game, Jered Munro made and end to end rush and scored the final goal. The score was Seaforth 6 and Clinton 2. The Seaforth's elation was to be short-lived, however, on Sunday Harriston came to play an ex- hibition game. They took the lead late in the first period and Seaforth didn't tie it up until late in the second period. Josh Dietz let a hard shot go from the point and Mark Van Dooren deflected it into the net. Only 23 seconds later Harriston took the lead again and never looked back. The final score was Harriston 5 and Seaforth 1. Story hours to resume at library NO SENIOR SHUF- FLEBOARD TODAY.
