The chief business before the annual meeting of the members of the Culross Matta] Fire Insurance Co,, on Saturday, January 20th, was the election of three directors to take the places of Wm, Mo - Donald, James Ballagh, and George Mof- fat, whose terms had expired. Moffat had been chosen during the past year to take the place of Mr. Ackert who had resigned. That, the Board for 1905 bad given satisfaction to the membere was indicated by the fact that all three Were re•eleeted for another term, The Annual report by altditore, S. L. Purves and John McRae, show that the business of the oompay is being conducted on sound principles and that the finances are in. good condition. The losses by fire and lightning to the oompany during 1905 amounted to $3,450. Collections on as- sessments during the year were $3,008 84, the assets of the Company are $3,183,01, and there are no liabilities. There were 853 pSlicieii issued during the year. The Board of Direetere meet in Teeewater on the last Saturday of each month. (;ODEIUCJt Miss Annie Lamprey, daughter of Wm. Lamprey, Huron Road,was almost fustantly killed on Sunday while driving home from 11uos Church in town. The horse kicked for some cause, strioking the unfortupate young lady twice and pausing her to fall out of the buggy, She uttered a cry, managed to walk to the side of the road andthere fell dead. Miss Lamprey was well known and much esteemed and the sad occurrence is a shook to the community. Ii ]TClwIC.A, A rather unique accident accured to young Arohie Halliday, the 9th conoes- siou, a few days ago, which nearly proved fatal. He purchased a small quantity of phosphorus, by means of which he intended to make an experi- ment, and, placing it in his pooteet, by some meaus it became ignited, and in an inoreditably short time his clothes be- came a mass of flames. His body was severely burned, and the progress of the fire could be arrested only by plunging him in the snow, e • cvaLTON. The annual meeting of Dun's church, Walton, was held recently and was a most harmonious gathering. Rev. A. MacNab, M.A., pastor, presided and the various reports were presented and were of a very satisfactory character. The new year is entered upon with pleasing prospects. The only change in the • Board of Managers was the appointment of James Murray as successor to W. A. McCall. 1905 was a successful year in the congregation, all iedebteduess being met and a balance of $25 reported. 29 were added to the membership during the year and 14 removals, Ieaving a total of 123. Church and Manse are clear of debt and the various organizations are in a prosperous condition. For Missions $140 was raised. Excellent work was done by the Ladies' Aid, who are al- ways deserving of praise, having raised money for the pnrpose of flooring the basement of the church and planing a furauoe in the mouse. Wo aro pleased to hear that Mrs. Anderson has recovered from her recent illness. Peter Fraser has returned home from visiting friends in Kent and brought a team of valuable horses home with him. Mr. Douglass Fraser intends having his sale on the 13th of February. A number of young people from Howick and this vicinity spent a plea- sant evening at Mr. Elijah Higgins re- cently. Skating has been the order of the day for the past week. Quite a number of cattle passed through our burg on Saturday for ship- ment at Wingham. Miss Ethel Hooey of Toronto is visit- ing at her sister's Mrs. Jae. Wylie jr. Tailor's last week. A social and entertainment will be held in the school house of S.S. No. 9, East Wawanosh, on Friday evening, February 2nd. A good programme is being prepared, and an enjoyable time is anticipated. Proceeds to go toward de. fraying expense of a shed which has re- oeutiy been erected by the Sunday school workers of the section. On Friday of last week, Mr. W. Suth- erlaud, of the 121h concession, saw and killed a large garter snake which was sunning itself ou hie place. The reptile, which measured over three feet in leng- th, was quite lively and tried to get away, but Mr. Satherlaud, with the as- sistance of his clog, succezed in killing it, This is certainly an unusual occurr- ence for the mouth of January. I;,REY. James S. Houston has disposed of his 100 acre farm, lot 9, con. 16, Grey, to Wm. and Thos. Knox, of the same line, for the sum of :36,400. Possession will be given on March 1st. Mr. Houston may take a trip on a prospecting tour. A new brick residence will be erected by Wm. Work ou his fine farm, 11 miles north of Brussels. The material is be- ing hauled as sleiglnug permits. Last week considerable of the necessary brick was brought from S. S. CoIe'e yard, Heu- fryn. Jno. H. Hislop and wife are here from Arcola, N. W. T., on a holiday visit. ?,lrs. Hislop is a daughter of James Smillie, 18th con. They have resided in the West for the past few years andhave prospered. Thera is a possibility that they may not always sojourn iu the West, On Friday, Jaunary 19th, an old and well known resident of the 14th con,, in the person of George Shiels, paid Nature's debt, at the advanced age of 77 years. The funeral took place to Brus- sels cemetery on Monday afternoon, Rev, D. B. McRae, his pastor, conductlug an appropriate service. Mr. Shiels Was born in the village of Biggar, Lanarkshire, Scotland, on Oot. 20th, 1828. He was nuited in marriage to Susan Wortley in Fellerten township, Perth Co., lit 1857. She pre -deceased her husband 17 years ago. There were 11 children born to Mr. and Mrs. Weis. The subject of this notice took up land in Grey, 15th eon., before he wus married, coming to the township in 1852 and by industry and economy did more than make a living even in pioneer days. John Shiels, 14th con,, and Wm., of Biggar, Scotland, are brothers and Mrs. James Anderson sr., of "rurnberry township is a sister to deceased. Mr. Shieis was a zealous Presbyterian in religion and a warm Liberal in politics.
