been a Sills in the brigade since
1875. George A. Sills was a charter
member of the brigade and served it
faithfully for 60 years until his
retirement in 1935.
Fire chiefs through the years,
some serving more than one term,
have been: James Cline, Dennis
Hour, George A. Silts, James R.
Wright, George Murray, William
Cline, William Reid, John P. Bell,
Parker Queihton, Frank Sills Sr.,
Alfred Box, R.G. Pouche, John
Cumming, John McKenzie, E.J. Pat
Box, A.W. Dick, Nam Scoins,
D'Orlean Sills, Allen Reid, John F.
Scott, Donald W. Hulley and Harry
Hak. John F. Scott served from
1951 to 1973, the longest term of
any.
Over the years firemen have been
active in other events of the com-
munity such as old boys reunions,
band tattoos, dances, barbecues,
sport competitions, arena fund
raisings, and particularly the Mus-
cular Dystrophy campaign for
which the firemen assume respon-
sibility. Local firefighters also hold
a July 1 breakfast, and have used
the funds to help pay for
renovations to Tanker #5, and to
help the hospital building fund.
The time of simply fighting fires
in wood structures has passed. New
techniques have been developed
requiring a professional approach to
duties which can involve chemically
fed fires and spills, structural fires,
fires involving deadly foam in-
sulation, car accident extrications,
and search and rescue. Many of the
men of the Seaforth Brigade have
taken courses put on by the Ontario
Fire Marshall's Office on such
topics as auto extrication, pump
hydraulics, radio communication,
officers training, ladder and hose
lays, breathing apparatus and ven-
tilation.
The department covers all of
Seaforth, part of McKillo
Township, one third of Tuckersmi
and small parts of Hullett and Hib-
bert Townships.
Firemen are dedicated men who
are on call 24 hours a day, 365
days a year. More common venae
paid to good housekeeping and
maintenance procedures by the
public would help in keeping the
work of the fire fighter to a
minimum.
Please remember that this week -
Fire Prevention Week - and all
year.
