THEY'RE AT THE POST...and they're off! The population of Seaforth Public School tore up the turt on Friday afternoon for their own Terry Fox Run. In Seaforth 570 participants - including Terry Fox Run in Seaforth brings in $2,500 for Cancer research "A WATER STOP AT THE 20 KM MARK..." - It wasn't quite that strenuous, but a good number of runners, walkers and bikers made it out to the Terry Fox Run on Sunday moming to do their part for Cancer research. Here, Recreation Director Marty Bedard goes over the 10k course at the Van Egmond House starting point. Pestered pets? One flea could mean 1000 at large We may seem to be having a banner year for fleas, but a Seaforth veterinarian reports that the problem is actually no worse than it has been any other year. "If you have a major flea problem, environmental treatment is the most important thing," says Ray Reynen, D.V.M. at the Seaforth Veterinary Clinic. He adds that there have been a good number of flea cases coming into the Clinic this year, and that much of the animals' discomfort can stem from a simple allergy to the flea -bites. Although most pet owners will try to treat their animals at home with shampoos and flea powders, Dr. Reynen says that killing the fleas on the pet is only touching the tip of the iceberg. "Everybody tries treating the animal," he says. "But for every one on the animal, there arc 100 to 1000 fleas in the environment." There are a lot of 'home remedies' floating around out there, he adds, including putting garlic on the animal's feet and sprinkling brewer's yeast on the beast, but "none of these have any scientific iasis". The old standby, flea col- lars. are also only a stop -gap measure when it comes to control- ling the wily flea. 4 "It's just a local effect," Dr. Reynen explains. "All it really docs is chase the fleas from the head down to the tail." If you notice your pet scratching, look for fleas. If you find them, don't panic. Fleas are not an in- dicator of an unkempt animal, but they are an indicator of a larger flea presence in the environment_ Steps to eliminating the pest include: FOR YOUR PET 1. Bathe your pet with a flea shampoo. Towel dry the coat, and then treat with a residual insec- ticide. For best results, apply the insecticide to the entire body, making sure that it is massaged down to the skin level. Re -treat as required from time to time. FOR YOUR HOME 1. Vacuum the home thoroughly, paying special attention to a) the pet's resting arca, h) underneath furniture, c) perimeter of the rooms and haselioards, d) all car peted areas and e) closets and stair- ways. Mop all hard surface flooring. b2.SSeal and dispose of the vacuum 3. 7boroughly wash or destroy your pet's bedding. 4. Treat your home with residual insecticide. Dr. Reynen says that aerosol 'flea bombs' are one of the most effec- tive home treatment methods around. If your pet is an indoor - outdoor animal, the pet's area in the yard or porch can also be sprayed to destroy flea infestations. "OS 114 HOUSEHOLD IN DFVELOr1A10 STAGES He does add, however. that not all flea control products are created equal. Some are designed to destroy Jolt fleas, while others work on fleas in the larva or egg Oar - While a feeding adult flea needs a host to survive, they can live off of a host for up to six or eight weeks. An immature flea in the egg or larva stage that has not yet fed from a blood source, says Dr. Reynen, can live for up to two years. So just picking fleas off of your pet, thinking that you've got the problem under control, is a joke. "They also say that for every one flea on the dog, there can be 5000 in the immature stages in the en- vironment," he warns. So is there an end in sight? The veterinarian says that fleas generally need high temperatures and humidity to survive. If your pct has been treated with a flea repellent, chances are ?nod that the adult fleas will not live long past the next month or two. If there is a serious problem, and your pet is scratching to the point of being raw, consult your vet as soon as possible to get the pest situation under control. If your cat or dog is an active host, the bugs will stick around for the free ride as long as they possibly can. "To see fleas in the winter doesn't surprise me " the schools - raised close to $2,500 for Cancer research this weekend. HOOFING FOR HEALTH, Carly Price and Jill Camochan were still in pretty good shape past the halfway mark of the Terry Fox Run on Sunday. The 12 -year-olds, who raised $25 and $40 respectively, participated in the Seaforth run for their second year to raise money for Cancer research.
