Squirt I's fight to 'B'
consolation title
The St. Columban Squirt 1 Soccer
team ended their season in great
style. The team travelled to
Bryanston for the Prel►minary Play-
off Tournament on Saturday,
August 11 and defeated Coldstream
1 2 - 0 in a close and will played
match. This win put St. Columban
up against Exeter IV in the semi-
final game. Despite the hot weather
and two questionable off - side
goals being called back, the team
never quit. Everyone worked hard
and St. Columban dominated,
playing a very offensive game. This
win caddied St. Columban to play
for the "B" Championship.
St. Columban travelled to Lucan
on Saturday, August 25 to facie
Grand Bend in the "B" final. Curtis
Murray was keen and scored for St.
Columban just minutes into the
game. Strong goaltending by Cory
Dekroon and great defensive play
by Barry Verberne, Allison
Devereaux, and Jessica Finlayson
kept Grand Bend scoreless in the
fist half. Grand Bend came back
with a goal early in the second half
in what became a very intense
match.
St. Columban had several oppor-
tunities to go ahead with half -backs
Tim McClure, Michelle Flanagan
and Kyle Henderson controlling the
mid -field. The St. Columban club
played one of their sero ngc., 6,1l/ALJ
of the season. Forwards, led by
Curtis Murray, Greg Van Loon,
Bradley Klaver, Adam Koehler,
Kyle Murray and Clare Murray
worked hard for possession and
carried the ball well. No-one quit
working or gave up. A shot on net
by Clare Murray resulted in a
penalty shot being awarded to St.
Columban. However, the Grand
Bend goaltender made the save.
Tim McClure saved the day for
St.Columban by kicking a loose ball
off of the goal line in the dying
minutes of the game.
The whistle blew to a 1 - 1 tie
and after 10 minutes of rigorous
play the match was still tied. The
fans and coaches were exhausted
not to mention the players! Goal -
tender Cory Dekroon made some
excellent saves during the game -
deciding penalty kicks that fol-
lowed. St. Columban lost 3 - 2 with
Barry Verberne scoring on his
penalty kick.
The entire Si Columban Squirt 1
soccer team played tremendously in
the preliminary and final play-off
games. Their coaches, Teresa, Pat
and Brad, are very proud of each
and every player. They all showed
great determination, desire and good
sportsmanship. Winning is not
everything, but doing you best is!
Pat Murray to skate
with the Flyers
Dublin native Pat Murray, a
second -round pick in the 1988 NHL
draft, will finally get a chance to
show his stuff this season when he
laces up with the Philadelphia
Flyers.
Murray, who has been playing
with Michigan State, has forfeited
his senior year of eligibility with
the University to turn professional
with the Flyers. He arrived in
Philadelphia on Wednesday to sign
a three-year contract with the team.
"Philadelphia is entering a youth
movement, and Pat has been
promised a real opportunity to win
a spot with the big team," said
Murray's agent Ron Salcer in a
telephone interview with the Strat-
ford Beacon Herald.
No dollar figures were given, but
Salcer hinted broadly at a handsome
contract for the 6'3" left winger.
The three-year deal was described
as being "in the same range as the
top college players", with a signing
bonus of $100k plus.
Last year Pat Murray, a former
Stratford Cullitons player, was the
tie int to elm 1 hope ‘r'1 Ziatnner of Stratford. "He base 't

CCHA all-star left winger with the
MSU Spartans and was among the
top offensive players in the country,
racking up 24 goals and 60 assists -
leading the league in assists - over
45 games.
Pat Murray will command salary
of $140,000 U.S. annually in the
NHL, and a release will mean a
$50,000 salary.
Michigan State coach Ron Mason
was in Stratford last week to take in
the Cullitons practice. He admits
that the Spartans were sorry to let
Murray go, but added that his per-
formance last season with MSU
hinted at better things to come. He
was fairly certain that an NHL
contract was in the works for Pat
Murray, and wasn't counting on his
return to the Spartan lineup.
"And he's got the skills and the
talent to play in the National
League," Mason noted. Pat Murray
also played for Team Canada earlier
this summer in the Goodwill
Games.
Pat is the son of Ron and Theresa
Murray of R.R. 1, Dublin.
Playoff spot earned by
third-place St. Columban
St. Columban men's soccer team
travelled to Sarnia last Sunday,
September 9, to play their final
regular season scheduled game
against Sarnia Dante. Dante edged
St. Columban 3 - 2 for the win.
Sarnia opened the scoring midway
through the first half when a Sarnia
forward jumped on a rebound and
drove the ball into the open net. St.
Columban evened the score at a
goal apiece when Tony Arts made
a mistake on a penalty shot. The
shot was awarded to St. Columban
when Steve Ryan was taken down
from behind in the penalty box
area.
St. Columban increased their lead
to 2 - 1 in the second half when
Jason Schoonderwoerd headed the
ball into the net off of a beautiful
crossed ball, corner -kicked by
Socratis Liabotis. After this goal by
St. Columban. Samia started their
push forward to score the tying
goal. St. Columban played solid
defense and held off Sarnia until
about the final 15 minutes of the
game, when Sarnia scored two
goals to earn their 3 to 2 victory.
St. Columhan players become very
tired near the end of the game,
having played the whole match
without any substitutes available in
the hot weather. Sarnia, meanwhile
had five substitutes that they used
periodically to keep their players
fresh on the field.
St. Columban finished the regular
season on Sunday and their record
ended up at 8 wins 5 losses and 1
tie for 17 points. This record puts
St. Columban in 3rd place and
gives them a berth in the playoffs.
The playoffs begin this weekend
but it was not confirmed at press
time as to when and who Si.
Columban will play in the first
round. For information about the
playoffs, contact any one of the
players later this week.
