Lots of firsts planned BY SUSAN OXFORD The Seaforth Fall Fair is soon approaching and there are a number of new activities offered at this year's Fair. The Fair is on Thursday, Sept. 20, and Friday, Sept. 21, and there are many ac- tivities to participate in, plus the midway promises to be better this i year. There will be a children's Big Pumpkin contest and prizes for the biggest pumpkins. So pull that monster out of the pumpkin patch ARTHRITIS INFORMATION NIGHT at Seaforth Community Hospital MONDAY, SEPT. 24 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Physiotherapy Department See... Also for children will be a Big Sunflower contest to enter the big- gest sunflower they grew this year. Last year local resident, Harvey Beurermann, grew a giant sunflower and saved the seeds which he gave away to children and teachers. Children were given five or six seeds and from all accounts almost all of the seeds germinated. The contest this year is open to sunflowers grown from other seeds than Harvey's. Organizer of the Big Sunflower contest Lois Hodgert said "We hope that having children nurture and grow something will stimulate interest in bringing something to life. If their seeds grew like mine (about 14 feet tall) then it sure grew. The annual parade is scheduled for Friday morning and will leave Optimist Park at 11:00 a.m. and head down Main Street to the high school area. Jack McLachlan, Chairman of the Parade committee, said there are new events planned for the parade. "Vintage cars and tractors will participate in the parade." he said. "There will be an OPP Colour Party flag carriers along in the parade. This year it looks like we're going to have more horses in the parade." TRIANGLE DISCDUNTSS. This year's parade theme is `Our Precious Environment' and entrants should keep that in mind when decorating their floats. Lyle Haney, President of the Seaforth Fall Fair committee, said another new thing at the Fair will be the Shabha Horse Show Friday evening. The show is open to 4-H members and any interested young horsepeople. The show has 25 classes and there is a three-minute tack change allowed between each class. In the Home Economics division of the Fair is a new 60 per -cent whole wheat bread baking contest. The winner of this event will be eligible to move onto a higher competition at the Toronto Conven- tion in January. This year Bingo players will be delighted to know the Fair will be holding its first dabber bingo. The games will be played Thursday night from 7:00 to 10:00 and Friday afternoon from 1:00 to 3:30. Both games will be held upstairs at the arena. Dabbers will be available for 75 cents each and cards will be 25 cents for a strip of three. The Seaforth Agricultural Society will award cash prizes, the size of which will depend on the size of the pot collected from entry fees for the Bingo. Refreshments will be sold at the Bingo.
