Rceogauod for their efforts are: Lynn Burke, Prunro e and Purche; Gerald Noble, Nobel Nursery and Salutation; Steve Hil- debrand, Hildebrand Flowers; and John Staf! cn, Staffen's Lawn Cade. The awards are presented to 12 Canadians, one from each province and territory, as & national launch of Small Business Week in Oc- tober. Nominees are aged 29 years or younger and are judged b operunng success, innovation at community involvement, and the entrepreneurs age when the business was started is taken into con- sideration. Judges for the awards are business professionals, entrepreneurs, representatives from the media, members of local Boards of Trade and Chamber of Com- merce, and persorunel from FBDB. The prize includes a trophy, an all - expenses paid trip to the awards ceremony in a major Canadian city, and publicity. Adeline (Lynn) Burke is 29 -years - old and is marred to Tom with three children aged 2, 4 and 6. She graduated as a registered nurse RNA and worked at Seaforth Com- munity Hospital for seven years, including two years as a physiotherapy assistant. Lynn is a member of the Catholic Women's League, is a parent advisor on the P.T.A., has been involved in fundraising for the Seaforth Com- munity Hospital, and has taught a smocking class. When Lynn opened her gift shop Primrose and Panache in April, she filled a gap in Seaforth's retail sector. The shop sells Victorian gift items and in the first four months of operation the store has exceeded its projected sales and the inventory has increased. Primrose and Panache employs two part-time staff and Lynn woks at the store full-time. Lynn plans to fill a need in Seaforth by expanding Happy Seniors regroup for activities . . • The Seaforth Happy Senior citizens entertained at the Huron - view August Birthday Party. Jim Rose on the piano, Stanley Hillen, Wilson Adams, Wilson McCartney on violin and Ed. Boyes on the mo i** organ delighted their audience with tunes of yester year. Amy Shapton and Cheryle Colson's dancing brought applause, and humour was added with readings by Beuy Hulley and Helen Mac Ken- zie. "Happy Birthday" was sung, led by Marion Rose, and Happy Birthday balloons were given to 19 residents. Three had reached their ninth decade. Beverage and cookies under the convenorship of Rachael Riehl brought the afternoon's enter- tainment to an end. Happy Senior Citizen's will begin their fall activities with a Pot Luck dinner at 12 o'clock on September 6 in the Legion Hall. Seniors are asked to bring own cutlery and dishes. Gerald (Jury) Nobel is 29 -years - old, is married to Brigit and has two children aged 2 years and 10 months, with another child on the way. He apprenticed as a mechanic after high school and worked as a mechanic in Edmonton. Jerry is involved in the community and has yet up a non-profit recycling program. Jerry operates a waste removal business that in the last four years has tripled in terms of number of customers and, naturally, volume. He has expanded the business from local household pick-up to include industrial, commercial, and institutional waste removal. Jerry also operates Nobel Nursery, which has doubled the number and variety of trees and sales since he bought the business. The nursery offers a unique service where Jerry approaches customers at new residential sites and demonstrates his nurseryman abilities and products to suit their landscaping needs. Nobel Nursery and Sanitation employs full-time Jerry and Brigit is the full-time bookkeeper and secretary, and one part-time employee. Art SEAFORTH 527-1750 JERRY NOBEL continue to offer advise on selecting and caring for new trees and provide the customer with infor- mation and an inspection of new trees the following year. Steve Hildebrand is 28 -years -old, is married to Ruth and has one child aged 2. He completed a Flowers Canada Design Phase I course at the University of Guelph in the summer of 1980. Steve has served on the Seaforth Streetscape committee, is past president of the Seaforth Horticultural Society and has served as the Society's president. For the past four Christmases Steve and Ruth have decorated their home in a Victorian Christmas theme and opened it to the public. Steve founded Hildebrand Flowers 10 years ago when he was 18 -years -old. Besides retail floristry Steve provides a decorating service for weddings and other special occasions and has become involved with interior decorating. The retail florist and gift shop has doubled and in April Steve bought the buil- ding housing his store. Hildebrand Flowers employs Steve full-time and one full-time and one part-time employees. John Staffer is the youngest of the four, 25 -years -old, and the only one that is single. After finishing high school he took night courses in landscaping at Fanshaw College, London. Currently he is working towards obtaining his Her- bicides/Pesticides spraying licence. John often provides his services to various clubs and organizations in Seaforth on a donation basis for the betterment of the community. In 1987 John started his own lawn care business and since then the business has more than tripled. Staffen's Lawn Care provides full lawn maintenance, landscaping services, free estimates and advise to their customers. The company maintains 110 lawns a week and has a contract that consists of total ground maintenance of five senior citizens' buildings. John's lawn care prices are competitive and in great demand. Staffen's Lawn Care employees John full-time, two full-time and two part-time employees. One of John's employees graduated from Niagara College's diploma course in Horticulture and has expertise in plants, plant disease and landscape design. In the future John wants to expand his business even further by starting a nursery for a supply of trees and plants in his landscaping work. John is working on a contract to go to Africa to do landscaping work this winter.
