She was a mother so true and rare,
The trials she went through.

She never complained
She wasn't that kind,
Just one of those mothers,
So hard to find
Dear God, please take this message.

THE HURON EXPOSITOR AUGUSi 15 1990 — 13
years studying " myrinecochory,"
the niufatally beneficial relation-
ship among cerasin spec its 01
wildflowers and ants.
It's a significant factor in wood-
land ecology, because 25 to 40 per
cent of all herbaceous plants in
many eastern North American
woodlands depend on ants as the
primary way of ensuring the disper-
sal of their seed;.
The researchers theorize that the
relationship works like this: the
seeds tit cerunn w ddtlowers sport a
fleshy pad called an chasmic,
whose sole tune uun seems to be
that of auracung towing ants. The
ants cart the seeds back to their
bests and eat the ehasoaies. The
seeds remain unharmed, but are
treated as refuse by the ants, which
discard them on their own rubbish
heap. This rotting organic maternal
provides ideal condiuons tot plant
growth and root development.
Goderich conservation day
Farmers interested in maintaining
the long-term productivity of their
soil while protecting the environ-
ment should plan to attend Conser-
vation Day, Thursday August 23rd,
from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Feagan
Farms, in Colborne Township.
The theme of this years event is
"environmentally responsible
agriculture". Guided tours will be
run to allow visitors to view a
variety of practices including
manure management facilities,
conservation tillage demonstrations,
crop plots, erosion control measures
and woodlot management.
This event will feature tours of
Feagan farms, and guest speakers
during the lunch hour, including
Bob Bedggood of the Middlesex
Federation of Agriculture.
This event is sponsored by the
Huron Soil and Crop Improvement
Association, the Maitland Valley
and Ausable Bayfield Conservation
Authorities and the Ministry of
Agriculture and Food. More infor-
mation is available through the
Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and
Food, at 482-3428, the Maitland
Valley Conservation Authority, at
335-3557, or the Ausable Bayfield
Conservation Authonty, at 235-
2610.
The Feagans have been actively
using conservation practices for a
number of years. Guided wagon
tours of their farm will be run in
the morning beginning at 10:00, and
in the afternoon until 3:00. The
Feagan Farms is located 4
kilometres east of Highway 21 on
County Road 25, near Carlow.
Watch for the conservation tour
signs. Admission and lunch are
free.
The first conservation day was
held on the farm of Don Lobb, near
Holmesville. Traditionally the event
is held on the farm of the Norman
Alexander Conservation Award
Winner. This award is presented
annually by the District.
Conservation tillage practices can
be defined as any planting or tillage
system that retains at least 30 per-
cent residue cover on the soil sur-
face. Because these practices can be
a little different for each site and
operator, the Soil and Water
Conservation District has focused
on establishing tillage trials to learn
how to use these new tillage sys-
tems in a variety of different con-
ditions.
