Hockey team welcomes new general manager
It may not feel like hockey season
but the first practice is a scant 6
weeks away for the Seaforth Cen-
tenaires. President Bob Beutten-
miller and the execuuve are pleased
to announce the appointment of
Gregor Campbell as general
manager of the Ontario Hockey
Association Junior D League team.
Campbell, 41, a local factory
worker, photographer and former
journalist who is also the executive
member of the now -disbanded
Seaforth Seahawks senior hockey
team, replaces Glen McClure who
resigned from the position but
remains a member of the juniors'
executive. He had been the Cen-
tenaires' manager since 1983 and
held that post in 1985-86 when the
team won its first and only OHA
championship. Campbell would like
to help win another one. The first
step will be put a team on the ice
that is competitive game in and
game out. The team has missed the
playoffs for the past several
seasons.
"I know these guys and what they
can do and we already have the
talent locally," Campbell said. "The
trick will be to get it working
together with a bit more discipline
and intensity. They have got to
want to.
"I'm lucky, somebody else did the
dirty work. The team has struggled
with a young roster for the past
couple of seasons and now is
coming of age. Some of these lads
may be playing Junior B or Junior
A this year and we certainly don't
want to stand in the way of their
hockey development. But on the
other hand I'd prefer to see our
local talent play here and help win
a championship than go somewhere
else and sit on the bench.
"The executive and I also have to
get the team on a more secure
financial footing", "After the past
couple of losing seasons our bank
balance is tottering on the brink of
the abyss. Look for a bit more
sizzle and lot more steak. It has
been my experience that if you put
a winner on the ice, at Least at the
junior level, the fans will soon
follow. Our next step is to find a
coach that can help make it hap-
pen," said Campbell.
An announcement is expected in
a couple of weeks. Last year's
coach, Graham Nesbitt, has
resigned to devote more time to
Safety Seekers learn about tractor safety
The sixth meeting of the Seaforth
Safety Seekers was held on July 17,
1 p.m., at the home of Gerda Van-
den Hoven. The meeting started
with the 4-H pledge, and Barbara
Wynja read the minutes of the last
meeting.
Members talked about sheer
points, pinch points, wrap points,
crush points, free -wheeling parts
and pull -in points.
They then watched two films, one
about horse power and the other
about the safety of a tractor.
The club went for a walk around
the property outside, looking at
machinery and talking about the
dangerous parts.
Then all the members enjoyed a
few games of "win, lose or draw."
The snack was then served.
The achievement night will be
held on August 29 at 7:30 p.m., at
Brussels Public School.
Seaforth Merchants lose again this week
The Seaforth Merchants were
losers on the ball diamond again
this week. Tuesday night saw the
senior mens hardball team shut out
9 - 0 by Exeter and Wednesday
night edged 6 - 5 by Strathroy.
Exeter began its rampage early on
last Tuesday night scoring two runs
in the first inning, two in the
second, three in the third and two in
the seventh to hand Seaforth a 9 - 0
loss.
Totals in the game for Seaforth
included no runs on three hits, five
errors and four men left on base.
Hitters were: Dave Garrick, Del
Mitchelmore and Anstett. Exeter
scored nine runs on seven hits,
made one error and left 14 men on
base.
A bad first inning for the Mer-
chants was the main reason for
Seaforth's loss to Strathroy Wed-
nesday night. Strathroy scored five
unearned runs on four Seaforth
errors to take a 5 - 0 lead after one.
Strathroy added to its lead with a
run in the fourth, and Seaforth
came back with three runs in the
sixth to narrow the gap to one run.
Gerard Ryan and Martene singled
in that inning to put runners on first
and second, then moved to second
and third on a sacrifice bunt off the
bat of Dale. Rick Boon then singled
to score Ryan, Matetich singled to
score. Martene and Marc Robinet
singled to score Boon.
Seaforth scored its five runs on
nine hits, made five errors and left
12 men on base. Hitters in the
game were: Boon (2), Matetich (2),
Dale (1), Robinet (1), Martene (1),
Dave Akey (1), and Ryan (1).
Strathroy scored six runs on nine
hits, made five errors and left 10
men on base.
"This is the sixth or seventh time
this year we let a game get away on
us," commented coach Robinet.
St. Columban soccer loss
St. Columban men's Soccer team
played at home July 29 against
Chatham City and the result was a
disappointing 3 to 2 loss for the
home team.
The game was to start 6:00 p.m.
but it did not get under way until
7:00 p.m. because their was some
discussion as to what to do since
the referee did not show up. It is
the leagues responsibility to make
sure that their is a referee scheduled
for each and every game. Both the
Chatham and St. Columban teams
showed good sportsmanship by
agreeing to play the game without a

qualified referee but to have a local
man referee the game.
Although Chatham started the
first part of the game strong, and
carried most of the play, St. Colum -
ban capitalized on a rush and Rem
Murray finished off with a nice shot
to the corner of the net. Chatham
replied quickly and tied the game at
1 a piece. Rem Murray put St.
Columban ahead 2 to 1 before the
half ended when he made no mis-
take ona penalty shot.
St. Columban played much
stronger in the second half and
appeared to have the victory in
hand but late in the game with only
about 15 minutes left penalty shots
were called against them. Chatham
scored on both of them. St. Colum -
ban also had a goal disallowed
earlier in the half. The game ended
in a 3 to 2 score for Chatham.
St. Columban does not play the
next two weekends due to the long
weekend and Cup game schedules.
St. Columban's next game is Sun-
day, August 19 against Exeter in
Exeter. St. Columban's next home
game is Sunday, August 26 at 6:00
p.m. in St. Columban. This is the
last regular season home game for
the year, and your support would be
appreciated.
BRODHAGEN & DISTRICT CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
CHICKEN BBQ DRAW WINNER
WARREN ROCK (left) of Mitchell was the first prize winner, last
Wednesday night at the Brodhagen & District Chamber of Com-
merce chicken barbecue draw. He selected a 46" Yard Man riding
lawnmower from Ward's Farm Equipment. Other prizes offered
were from Logan Ford Tractor Sales and Logan Farm Equipment
(1988) Ltd President Neil Rapien is also pictured.
Ken Glanville of R R 4 Walton won $300., Ron Frayne of Mit-
chell won $200. , and Bob Scott, also of Mitchell, won $100.
"We should have won down in
Strathroy. They only scored one
earned run - but we made five
errors and left 12 men on base. You
just can't do that and expect to win
against Exeter. We only had three
hits and again you've not going to
win ball games by just getting three
hits, no matter how many runs you
give up. I hope we can turn this
thing around, the playoffs are just
around the corner."
Seaforth plays in Exeter Tuesday,
August 9 the start of a best two of
three playoff series. Results of last
nights game against Kincardine
were unavailable at press time.
minor hockey. This season'
schedule will also be released soon,
but the team's fust practice is Sun-
day Sept. 16, Hensall arena, 8:30
p.m. The executive of the Cen-
tenaires would like to invite all
interested players to try out for the
team this year. For more infor-
mation call Campbell 527-0273.
"Don't wait for an invitation
because maybe we can't afford
stamps," said Campbell, "but that
doesn't mean that you won't be
welcome."
