New priest welcomed to Seaforth parish
BY SUSAN OXFORD
Father J. Healy Cassano was
welcomed to SL James pariah as the
new priest with a liturgical instal-
lation un the feast of SL James the
Apostle, July 25. To introduce
Father Cassano was Father Terry
McNamara, Dean of Huron -Perth
Deanery. After the ceremony Father
Cassano was greeted by palati
members, about 60 in all. Casey
V aaBakel welcomed him to
Seaforth and called Seaforth "a hard
working and good spiritual com-
munity." The parish and Father
Cassano had an outdoor reception.
Henry Cassano was born in 1929
on the island of Malta, an indepen-
dent country in the Mediterranean
Sea. His birthtown is Senglea, a
town with a grand harbour which
made Malta a strategic location
during the Second World War.
Aber highHenryschool Henwent to
a technic school in Malta for two
years before deciding on the pries-
thood when he was 18 -years -old.
He met a parish priest who ran a
home for runaway girls. Henry felt
there was a challenge in working
with these girls and helping them
not get into trouble. The priest let
Henry serve mass to the girls.
"Faith is strong in Malta and
there, like here, society is chan-
ging," said Father Cassano. "The
girls wanted to be independent and
ran away. We helped them find a
way to be back home."
Henry went to theology school
and was ordained with 29 other
priests. Today there are 27 from the
group; one quit and two died.
Since joining the priesthood
Father Cassano has worked in
Australia in 1960 and came to
Canada in 1969 to the Diocese of
London. His first Canadian as-
signment was Ashfield Parish,
Kingsbridge and St. Augustine,
Lucknow. He was temporarily
transferred to Windsor in 1972,
Emeryville in 1973 and London in
1976. In London Father Cassano
was one of the organizers in es-
tablishing a community of 'Ma-
rriage Encounters'.
A challenge was presented to
Father Cassano in 1979 by a Lon-
don bishop to look after the
Catholic community in Churchill
Falls, Labrador. The town had not
had a priest for five years and
Father Cassano went there for three
months and ending up staying 15
months.
"Maybe there wasn't a priest
there for five years because Chur-
chill Falls was a lonely place,"
explained Father Cassano. "There
was a hyrdo plant being built and it
made controversy between Quebec
and Newfoundland. In the town
were about 1,000 people.
"I became involved with the
school and religious education. The
people there are very good, but still
1 was lonely. I began to smoke
while I was in Churchill Falls, and
I still do smoke a little bit."

Father Cassano sees a char a tri
bow people view priests. . He
people see them more as beang
human and are willing to be sup-
portive of priests.
"A priest can be in a house alone
and people will now corse by to
visit, Father Cassano said. "All
priests are faithful to their vocation
and the aiaority remain faithful.
People have to give priests help,
especially if they are in a lonely
place.
"1 usually don't have a problem
with loneliness and 1 have visitors
and visit people."
After Churchill Falls Father Cas-
sano was transferred to the Parish
of St. Mary's, Hesson and St.
Joseph's, Listowel in 1980. In 1984
he was temporarily transferred to
St. Columban and then to Blessed
Sacrament, London. In 1986 he was
appointed to St. Michael's, Dres-
den.
"The church moves priests around
when it finds a need fora church
and a priest to fill that need,"
explained Father Cassano for his
frequent moves. "Maximum stay in
one place is six years. I have a
missionary spirit, although I've
never been on a mission. I like this
area."
Father Cassano said he is busy
watching Seaturth to see what the
needs of the community arc, even
though he feels people's needs are
the same everywhere. He is con-
cerned about the lack of young men
jouung the priesthood.
"There are so many distractions
for young people today," he said. "1
have a university degree and some
young men want to be paid well for
having a degree. In Europe we are
more faith strong and dont have all
the distracuons there are here."
This yew there were seven priests
ordained in London; most in their
late 20's or 30's and one widower.
Father Cassano explains the trend
of older new priests in North
America that "with age people
know what they want."
"In the schools 1 worked in 1
would usually meet a boy who was
thinking about joining the pries-
thood. Twice a year students from
high school would visit a seminary
and see the life there. When we
found someone with an interest in
the vocation he could go to the
seminary for one week 'to sample
the life. None of the ones I found
became priests.
1 want to find people's needs
and maitre priorities. I see sonic
problems for youth and 1 have find
out what's practical and carry Lai
from there ..•
For his 25th anniversary of being
in the priesthood in 1981 Father
Cassano took a holiday to Australia
to visit friends. Many tines he has
returned to Malta to visit family
and swim in the sea.
"'Rhe beaches in Malui are nice
and there's low to sec," said Father
Cassano. "On a beautiful day you
can see the island of Sicily. There's
been changes in Malta, like
everywhere. There's more tourism
incentive. With the sun we have
throe crops a year. Maybe next year
I will go to Malta for my nephew's
wedding."
Father Cassano said he is looking
forward to serving the Seaforth
community for many years,
especially the shut-ins, school and
hopefully every home. He wants to
make better acquaintance with
everyone entrusted to him and find
the dint needs of each individual
and family.
