FLOATS LIKE A BUTTERFLY - Seaforth Merchants catcher Bill Matetich gets knocked off of his pins
by a London Kings player dunng game two of their Saturday doubleheader. The catch was good but the

3-2 in extra innings. Elliott photo_
London took the lead in the
seventh, before Seaforth tied the
game with two out in the bottom of
the inning. Bedard and Ryan
walked, putting runners at fust and
second, and Boon delivered an RBI
single to send the game into extra
innings.
London failed to score in its half
of the inning, but in the bottom of
the eighth Feeney led off with a
double, moved to third on a
throwing error by the catcher, and
scored the winning run on a
sacrifice fly by Robinet.
Seaforth players had seven hits,
made two errors and left five men
on base. Hi!ting were Feeney (3),
Boon (2), Matetich (1) and Don
Tunney (1).
London had five hits, made one
error and left six men on base.
"These were two pretty good ball
games for us, but with a little more
effort I think we could have won
both of them," said coach Robinet.
"We had great pitching and it was
a shame to waste an outing like
this. We made three crucial errors
which cost us the first game, and
there was no excuse for any of
them. It was nice, though, to win
the second game, and hopefully that
has started the ball rolling in the
right direction."
Seaforth played Exeter last night
but results were unknown at press
time. The Merchants travel to
Strathroy tonight and are back
home Tuesday to play Kincardine.
Game time is 6:30 p.m. at Merchant
Field.
Atom I's taste gold in Exeter tournament
On July 21, the St.Columban
Atom I soccer team travelled to
Exeter for the annual Atom Tour-
nament. Their first game was
against Kensall Park from London.
Kensall Park scored first, but the
players come right back and Chris
Verberne made things even with a
nice goal. The game was very even,
with lots of action on both sides of
the field and some beautiful saves
from both goalies.
Kensall Park again went up by
one but St.Columban didn't give up
and hard work paid off with Scott
Schoonderwoerd scoring. The
defence of Scott Van Dooren, Daryl
Schoonderwoerd and Kyle Ben-
newies played excellent soccer and
the game ended in a 2 - 2 tie. 'They
then played two five-minute halves
with neither team scoring.
It was down to penalty shots, five
on five. Scott Schoonderwoerd and
Chris Verbeme were successful
with their shots, with Kensall Park
also scoring twice.
Then it was sudden death penalty
shots. St. Columban had first shot,
with goalie Mau Cronin taking the
shot and just missing the corner.
Mau then went back in goal and it
was Kensall Park's turn. They let
their goalie shoot and Matt made an
excellent attempt, getting a piece of
the ball, but it was hard enough to
just get past him.
Kensall Park won, but this was
definitely St. Columban's best game
of the year. Everyone hustled for
the enure game with special men-
tion going to Scott Van Dooren,
who seemed to be everywhere on
the field, and goalie Matt Cronin
with his excellent saves.
After this heartbreaking loss,
St.Columban's next opponent was
Taxandria. The team was still a
little "down" from the emotional
loss and it took them a while to get
their legs back. Again, there was a
lot of back -and -forth action but St.
Columban struck first with a goal
by Scott Schoonderwoerd. Scott

Van Dooren came up from his
defence position to score, putting
the team up 2-0. St. Columban laid
back a little and Taxandria came
back with two goals of their own.
The locals didn't want to see
overtime again, and Chris Verberne
made sure that didn't happen with a
nice goal. The rest of the game was
played very well defensively and
ended in a 3-2 victory for
St.Columban, advancing them to the
B final.
The final game was against
Exeter I, and the team was really
keen. Scott Schoonderwoerd scored
early to put St. Columban up 1 - 0.
Exeter came back before the end of
the first half with a goal, and at
half time - with the score tied 1-1 -
- it was time fora little pep talk
from the coaches.
It must have worked because St.
Columban came out fired up. Scott
Schoonderwoerd scored twice for a
hat -trick, Chris Verbeme tallied

'sting' Wallaceburg 2-1
This past Saturday, the St. Colum -
ban Men's Soccer Team travelled
south to Wallaceburg to play a
match against the first -place
"Sting". Wallaceburg failed to live
up to their nickname as the Fighting
Irish from St. Columban nipped the
Sting 2 to 1
The match could have gone either
way, as both teams played
extremely well. The difference was
that St. Columban was able to
finish their scoring opportunities,
while Wallaceburg could not. Wal-
laceburg's fancy behind -the -back
passes and World Cup style plays
meant absolutely nothing as
St.Columban just used the basics of
the game to secure the victory.
St. Columban opened the scoring
early in the first half, when
Socrates Liabotis drilled a rebound
from the crossbar into the lower
comer of the net. This goal made
St. Columban realize that they
could play with this team and win.
The local lads' spirits were dam-
pened when, with five minutes to
go in the first half, a disputed foul
was committed by Si Columban
fullback Jason Schoonderwoerd.
The penalty kick that followed was
well placed and evaded the hands
of Si Columban goal keeper Jason
Dieu. This goal sent the game into
the second half with the teams tied
at one apiece.
The pace continued in the second
half as both teams had chances to
pull in front. With 10 minutes to
play in the match, St. Columban
was awarded a corner kick. Steve
Ryan took the corner, but instead of
making a long cross, he made a
short pass to Mike Schoonderwoerd
who chipped the ball beautifully in
front of the net to Rem Murray,
who in turn headed it into the Wal-
laceburg net.
in the late stages of the game
Wallaceburg had numerous chances
but again failed to finish as St.
Columban went on to victory. The
victory handed Wallaceburg their
second defeat and pulled St.
Columban to within one point of
the first -place Wallaceburg team.
St. Columban now sits with a neat
seven win, three loss record. After
this win, the team's best effort of
the year, St. Columban looks strong
and ready for the playoffs which
are just four games away. This win
was even more uplifting as the team
came back from last week's disap-
pointing loss to the last place 1,on
don Spurs.
St. Columban's next game is at
home to Chatham City this coming
Sunday at 6:00 p.m. Cone on out
and cheer the local lads on to vic-
y.
