closer to a win
The Sotiarth Merchsws had a
victory soatt-hsed from thea pulp
last Ilsaiday eight when a dome
run by Exeter in the faai iritis
resulted in a 3 3 uc.
The game was svoxcJess until the
fourth caning, when Seafarth toot a
2 - 0 lad Gerard Ryan and Biu
Malawi' started the ball rolling for
the Merchants when they both
singled to put runners on first and
second, Rick Boon then singled,
scoring Ryan from second. Darren
Crocker vies safe on an error to
load filo bases for Doug Discepelo,
who that singled to score Maeda.
Seafortit'• lead was short-lived as
Exeter scored two runs of its own
in the bottom of the inning.
Seaforth west ahead in the eighth
when Marc Robinet doubled moved
to third when Ryan was safe on an
error, and scored when Matetich
was safe on another error.
Seaforth led 3 to 2 going into the
ninth but, with one out, Darcy
Martin of Exeter hit a solo home
run to centre field to tie the score.
The game was called and remained
tied due to darkness.
Robinet pitched all nine innings
for the Merchants, allowing three
runs on five hits, walking two bat-
ters and striking out eight.

for July 24 by
lawn bowlers
The Seaforth Lawn Bowling Club
held a mixed trebles tournament
Wednesday, July 11 sponsored by
Seaforth Canadian Legion Branch
156. Mr. DeJong presented first
prize of $ 150 to the family trio of
Art and Mary Finlayson and
daughter Brenda Empey, who
finished with 3 wins and 48 o/p 15.
In close second was Allan and
Edythe McNair and Ruth of Lon-
don's Thistle Club with 3 wins and
48 o/p 7. Third went to Wes Wat-
son and partners, also of London's
Thistle Club, with 3 wins and 43
o/p 12. Fourth place was Neil and
Edna Bell and Lee Ryan of the
home club with 2 wins and 41 o/p
8. Fifth place went to Cliff Ashton,
Audrey Walsh and Elmer Murray of
the Clinton Club with 2 wins and
40. Consolation prize went to Don
and Doris Sibley and Marg Ross of
the Woodstock club with 19 points
in their last game.
Although there were many close
games during the day there were
also some very high scoring games
as indicated by the over plus. The
weather was ideal for bowling and
there was a good entry.
Three teams motored to Lucknow
on Saturday only to have rain can-
cel the tournament. Two ladies
teams were in Goderich last Tues-
day sponsored by Canada Trust.
Sandy Pepper and Eileen Adamson
were also in the prizes at the Exeter
July 8 Standard Trust mixed pairs.
This Wednesday will be the New-
combe Trophy at Clinton, a double
draw and on Thursday will be
Ladies Pars at Atwood.
Next Tuesday evening July 24
will be the pot luck supper with
bowling or cards after. Hostess are
Thelma Dale, Gladys Doig, Ida
Diehl and Ruth Beutenmiller.
Hurdler to
Sudbury for
Legion track
Janice Rodney of Seaforth com-
peted in the Royal Canadian Legion
Provincial track and field cham-
pionships on Saturday, July 14 at
the Laurentian University track
complex, Sudbury.
Janice qualified to represent
District 'C' in the girls 15 -and -
under hurdles by winning the event
at the District track meet, held on
June 23 in Kitchener. At the Sud-
bury competition she placed third in
her heat, the fastest of the day.
She injured herself in the finals,
but still managed a seventh -place
finish. It was an excellent effort for
the local athlete, who has only
taken up hurdling in the four
months since March Break.

amd left nine man on base. Hull

(1), Boon (I), Ryan (1), B. Dale
(1). Discepclu (1) and Twwcy (1).
"This was a food game for us,"
commented coach Rubino., ouung
that the teams deferiic was "great",
the pitching was good and the baa
showed signs of improvement_
"Now we have to try and main-
tain the level to play, the rest of the
season and into the playoffs or ow
ball season will be over in a hurry.
I know this cream is much better
than its record (3 - 1 - 11). We
could easily have won five more
ball games with a little luck, but
who knows maybe our tum will
come around."
The Merchants were rained out on
Sunday, and last night results
against Exeter were unavailable at
press time.
The Merchants travel w London
Friday night to play Lakeside and
return home Saturday to play a
doubleheader against the London
Kings at 11 a.m. Seaforth travels to
Strathroy next Wednesday night for
a single game beginning at 7:30
p.m. All home games are played at
Merchants Field.

In lam week's Huron Expositor

Se Orth Senior games team noted
that Gordon Murray placed second
.11 Five Pin bowling at the Stratford
District competition. The report
should have road that the Five Pin
bowling team of Gordon Murray,
Ann Wood, Das Wood, Watson
Reid and Hazel McGonigle cap-
tured second in the event. The
