Clod B. Brown Sr. Egwoodvil e. Victim Impact Statement has the capacity to save lives Dear Editor: On February 17, 1988 my daughter Liz left an abusive mar- riage to seek shelter from her hus- band. On Manch 15, 1988 her hus- band shot her twice through the head. In the year and half following her murder, I found that 1 would be allowed to give a Victim Impact Statement to the court before sen- tencing. At the time 1 chose not to do this on advice from the Crown Attorney. I have since regretted that decision. To the pate out there who are victims of crime. I advise that you complete a Victim Impact Statement. The police will help you in this matter as will the Crown Attorney's Office. For those of you who like me, choose not too, you can still send a Victim Impact Statement to the Parole Board. This is very important as the parole then has a chance to see your side of the story. If you do this in court the Parole Board will receive the statement along with the court files, so either way. they hear your side of (lungs, not Just the cnminal's side. I also want to ask people to exon tact thou govemrnent regarding concerns of death due to family violence. My daughter sought refuge in a shelter and she was later murdered by her husband. Many wives and mothers have [act the same fate as Liz did. They have sought shelter from violence to face death at the hands of their nates. Many more women are unable to access shelters and also die at the hands of their partners and this must stop. Too many children who have seen or felt abuse are left homeless and frightened and if we the citizens of this country do not take a stand, the number of mur- dered women in this land will only increase as Public Opinion hides behind closed doors. Thank you, Alice Park P.O. Box 322 Kenora, Ontario P9N 3X4 Canadian disgusted with his own party's politicians Dear Editor, Being a conservative all of my adult life, 36 years, it is with a great deal of sadness and shame that I am writing this letter. But the time has come for me to speak out against the dictatorship of Brian Mulroney. I and people like me gave Mr. Mulroney the mandate to serve the people of Canada, we did not give him the mandate to become a dictator. His arrogance and the complete disregard for the democratic rights of the people concerning the G.S.T. is for me the last straw. He is a disgrace to the Tory party, and a poor excuse for a Canadian. Surely there is something wrong with this country when men of honour and integrity (the two M.P.'s from Alberta) are treated like whip dogs by Lying Brian, for having the courage to serve the people by voting against the G.S.T. The G.S.T is completely unfair and gives Mulroney and Wilson the license to steal from the people anytime they want. But hope springs eternal, and we can stop the G.S.T. I.R.A.T.E. citizens of Peterborough have a petition out from the Senate of Canada, if you are against the G.S.T. please sign it. If there is not a petition out in your area, contact I.R.A.T.E. citizens of Peterborough at Box 1473, K9J 7H7. They need ten million signatures to give the Senate the mandate from the people to stop this hideous tax. The Senate is there to serve the people. If we ignore the Senate, then we deserve the dictatorship of Lying Brian. Yours Sincerely, John Welham Information sought for Hay Township history records Dear Editor: The township of The Spanish River, formerly known as the Townships of Salter, May and Harrow (Township 116), Township of Hallam and the unorganized Township of Victoria, and at one time included the Towns of Mas- sey, Webbwood, and Walford Station, is celebrating its centennial January 1, 1993. We are writing a book about the history of the Township. Anyone who has any pictures, stories or interesting articles they could donate or lend for our endeavour would be greatly appreciated. Please send your submissions to: Township of the Spanish River, Mulling • from page 2 The Provincial government ap- pointed a special committee to evaluate the FTRP following this 1989 change. This committee has met with farm organizations, par- ticipants and other parts of government. They have compared our system to that used by other countries and other jurisdictions in correcting this unfairness. And they have developed 16 recommen- dations which have been in the hands of the Provincial government since April 1 1th. The recommendations arc almost exactly the position strongly put forth and lobbied for by the OFA. They arc: thc land and buildings (excluding residence) used in agricultural production should be taxed according to the "benefit principle" by the FTRP as the instrument of administration. Rebates arc not subsidies but an administrative way to achieve fair taxation on land The eligibility should be based u,. Life use of the land, not the income or the status of the land owner, and should be defined by a gross value of agricul- tural production. The rebate amount should be the education tax 20 teams Birch Lake Road, Massey, Ontario PUP 1 PO. Attention: Patricia Stin- son. Yours truly, Patricia Stinson Secretary The Expositor received another Letter to the Editor this week con- cerning the Seaforth Agricultural Soceity Tractor Elimination Draw. Unfortunately, it could not be published as it was not signed. The Expositor would like to remind writers that as a matter of policy, Letters to the Editor cannot be published if they are not signed. plus 25% of the municipal tax. The FTRP should not be used as a policy instrument to direct funds into agriculture, but only as what it is: a method of refunding an unfair tax. This fact should be com- municated to the public by the government. The Provincial government has recessed for the summer break now, and these recommendations sit waiting for their attention when they return in the fall. Everyone seems to be expecting a provincial election. In our riding, the Honourable Jack Riddell has an- nounced his resignation, so this is a time for evaluating candidates in all parties and choosing one to speak for us at Queen's Park. I feel that it would be very worthwhile to find out what any candidate's position on this issue would bc, and also how that can- didate would to deal with these recommendations and the property tax reform that would make this law. With legislation, it could never again be changed so quickly without consultation, and we would know where we stand. • from page For the third time in as many months, Seaforth Council spent nearly an hour discussing ways of shortening its meetings. The discus- sion, which produced two motions dealing with suggestions, continued until nearly one o'clock Tuesday morning.
