very early in the game. However,
the Nairn player Tony Vanden-
heuval struck the ball over the net.
St.Columban settled down after this
early scare and played veru well
through the first half. Although
there was no scoring in the first
half, both teams played very enter-
taining soccer.
The second half saw St. Colum -
ban carry the play a little more and
the team was pressing for a goal.
They were finally rewarded for
their efforts when Sean Melady and
Steve Ryan linked up to put the ball
past the Nairn goaltender with only
15 minutes left in the game.
Nairn pushed more players into
i
the ottense, looking, for the e-
qualizing goal, but the St. Colum -
ban defense of Mike Murray, Tim
O'Reilly, Jason Schoonderwoerd
and Tony Arts continued to play
solid defense and turned away the
Nairn forwards on every attempt.
Jason Dietz played well in net for
St. Columban to preserve the shut
out.
The game ended in a 1 to 0 score
in favour of St.Columban.
St. Columban plays away games
for the next two weeks against the
London Spurs next Sunday and
Wallaceburg the following Saturday
before returning home on July 29 to
play Chatham City.
Bakel and Mark kleuerrnan, with
Jared Mumy helping out again.
Ben Murray sent the ball in on a
corner kick, and Tracey Van Bakel
scored for Si Columban on a well-
placed penalty kick.
The Atom II's are really starung
to pass the ball around well. Great
work from everybody on the team
in this game.
The team trekked to Exeter on
.uly 2 to meet the Exeter I squad,
and came home on the wrong end
of a 3-2 score. Jeff Murray was
strong in goal again, with Joey
Staples and Ryan Hoegy playing
defence. Scoring for St. Columban
