FINISHING TOUCHES - Don Smith, CEO for Seaforth Community Hospital, puts the finishing
touches on Doug Halfpenny, Pharmacy at the hospital, as he puts the finishing touch on a
customer's glasses. The fun was all part of Seaforth's Petro Canada fundraising effort to raise
money for new x-ray equipment for the hospital. They raised $1,752 by selling 43,800 litres of
gasoline during Canada Day week. Oxford photo.
Father Caruana to new parish after 10 years
After almost ten years in the St.
James' Seaforth parish, Father
Charles Caruana has moved on to
St. Paul's in Thamesville, leaving
behind a decade of fond memories,
close friends - and a clean study.
"I haven't seen this floor for a
long time," he laughs heartily,
looking around the spotless room.
"Now I can see it - and my desk,
too!"
The past decade was Father
Caruana's second stint in Seaforth,
having been posted here for a year
in 1962-63 as an administrator with
the parish. Father Caruana returned
to St. James in August, 1980 from
Parkhill, where he had been pastor
for ten years. Prior to that, he had
been stationed in Kingsbridge,
Tillsonburg and LaSalle, near
Windsor, where he remained for
one year before moving on to
Parkhill. Staying in a parish for
more than one year, and for as long
as ten, reaps benefits. Father
Caruana has come to know he
people of Seaforth as family.
"When I came here in the 80's, I
was marrying the ones that I had
baptized in the 60's," he recalls. A
walk through the church records
shows that Father Caruana
administered 45 baptisms, six
marriages and 12 funerals in 1962
and 1963. During the 1980's, those
numbers skyrocketed to 260
baptisms, 120 marriages and 129
funerals. Father certainly knows
Seaforth.
"I want to know why I'm so
attached to Seaforth. I go through
the records...then I know why."
The people of the parish are also
attached to Father Caruana. Last
Sunday, St. James held a parish
picnic at Lions Park in his honour,
and presented him with a Lazy Boy
recliner. Father is eligible to retire
in two more years, upon turning 70,
and wonders if his congregation
wasn't broadly hinting at
something.
"They didn't have the courage to
say it right to my face, so they said

it with a chair, maybe," he
chuckles.
A talk with Father Caruana is
always liberally punctuated with
laughs and jokes. His sense of fun
has made him a favourite with the
kids of the parish and St. James
School, and he admits that leaving
his children will be the hardest part
of leaving Seaforth.
"I always miss the kids,
everywhere I go."
But with any luck, the kids in
Thamesville will take to him just as
readily, and Father Caruana will be
able to get his exercise in. His
exercise sessions were mentioned
several times at a farewell
ceremony put on by St. James for
Father last Monday, and he laughs
when reminded of this. Visiting the
school weekly to teach religion, he
finds that the kids' attention spans
lapse after a while.
"After the first ten minutes, I go,
`whoops, I think it's time for an
exercise—, he explains.
Although he expected to be in the
St. James parish until his
retirement, Father is looking
forward to his six-year posting in
Thamesville. He has the option to
retire in 1992, but it would be
unlike his nature to hand over the
reins before the job is done. As he
explained to the Expositor on the
occasion of his 40th anniversary in
the priesthood in April 1989, "to be
busy is one thing that helps you
enjoy your work. You have to get
involved in your work, and you
have to look for work sometimes."
"My job is my pleasure."
Father Caruana's place in the St.
James pulpit will not be vacant for
long. Father Henry Cassano, a
fellow Maltese native, will be
taking over the duties in the
Seaforth parish.
"He's always following me," says
Father Caruana, who has seen
Father Cassano close behind in his
footsteps since he left Malta for a
social work position in Australia in
1952. Father Cassano dogged him
A FAVOURITE WITH THE KIDS of the Seaforth parish, Father
Caruana was honoured last Monday at a special assembly held
by the students of St. James School. Father is off to St. Paul's in

Catholic Church, Seaforth. Elliott photo.
from Australia to Kingsbridge
before taking a parish in Labrador.
He also spent some time at the
church in St. Columban, and may
be a familiar face to some in
Seaforth.
"I think he was waiting for me to
move!"
With a week to get things in
order and move on to St. Paul's,
Father Caruana wasn't left with a
lot of time for reflecting on his ten
years in St. James, his first parish
in Canada. But his feelings on
leaving were clear; he's definitely
going to miss everything about
Seaforth.
"It's the parish as a whole...you
get close to a lot of families," he
says.
"I've enjoyed my stay."
