Coffee is the daily beverage of
thousands. It is peculiar to no
country or people.
The world uses it.
Now and again we hear some one
complain that coffee is unhealthful.
An odd one here and there discon-
tinues its use, but the mass of people
keep on drawing benefit from its
Stimulating effect.
We have always thought it was
largely a question of what sort of
coffee was used.
Pure coffee harms no one.

Roads in Bad Shape.
The rains of he past three weeks have
put the roads is Wingham and the sur-
rounding town4hips in very bad shape.
One road leadi g into Wingham is said
to be almost irnpasnb1e. the vehicles
sinking almost to the hubs of the wheels
in mud. One ould think that a few
lessons in road making would not be out
of place. To rade up a piece of road in
the summer nd then leave without
gravel is sure o make a bad road when
the fall rains t in. The roads in many
places do not ppear to be made high
enough to all w the water to run off.
The question f good roads could be stud-
ied with mac profit by the municipal
councils of inghara and adjoining
townships.

They Were Impostors.
On Friday las two ladies, heavily
veiled and plainly dressed, were making
a canvas of the b siness places and pri-
vate residences of Wingham, soliciting
aid for the Sick hildren's Hospital at
Toronto. Tows ds evening, Chief Van-
norman found t m at the King Edward
hotel and secu4ld 820 00 from them,
which was forvlarded to the hospital at
Toronto on Sat rday. The Chief secur-
ed their book nd found that several
leaves had beer cut from it. The sheet
containing th names of Wingharaites
showed contri rations to the amount of
over $9.00 and ither names on the sheet
were those of Enaforth people, where the
ladies operate en Tuesday and where
it is said, they s cured over $100. The
Chief was uvabf.s to get the names of
the ladies and clsild lay no charge again-
st them. TboyJ left town early Satur-
day morning. IWord has been received
from Toronto o the effect that no can-
vasers are engaged in the work of solicit-
ing aid for the Sick Children's Hospitr.l.
This institutics is certainly a very de-
serving one :Led every year receives
many donatio s from this town and the
ladies were tai ing a good way to se-
cure money. Our townspeople should
be very caref4 in giving funds to strang-
ers, unless th eau show proper authori-
