Thoughts.
Coffee is the daily beverage of
thousands, It is peculiar to no
country or people.
The world uses it.
Now and again we hear some one
complain that coffee is unhealthful,
An odd one here and there discon-
tinues its use, but the mase of people -
keep on drawing benefit from its
stimulating effect.
We have always thought it was
largelya question of what sort of
coffee aused.
Pure coffee harms no one.

BUTTON B4OOK BURNED.
Disastrous Fire estroys Property to
the Valu of $13,000.
About 4 o'clock o Tuesday afternoon
fire was uotieed in t• attic of the But-
ton Blook, near the o ntre of the build-
ing, and en alarm wa rung. The fire-
men quickly responds to the call and
soon had the water phi; nig upon the fire,
A hole had been made n the roof and
by this means access —as had to the
scene of the flames, wh oh were, appar-
ently, soon extiuguishe I. About 5.80
o'clock on Wednesday morning, how-
ever, au alarm was so ,tided, and the
firemen were quickly on hand and did
valiant service in bat ling with the
flames as in avery r few minutes three
s e
streams were playing o the building,
A strong south-west g le fanned the
flames and the efforts .f the firemen
were chiefly directed t• confining the
fire to the one building, , n which they
were successful.
The block was re -buil some years ago
by Mr. Wm. Button, t o present owner
being Mr. W. F. Van tone, live stock
dealer, who purchased it some two years
ago. Occupying the ' rat storey of the
premises were Mr. L. G. Kruse, grocer
and provision mero,ant; Mrs. W. E.
Aley, milliner; ii r. VanStone, the
owner, also had his •ffice in the rear of
the grocery; the u stairs was occupied
as dwellings by fly; families, Mr. W. E.
Aley, Mrs. McLea , Mr. Charles Swan-
son, Mr. Thos Fe s and Mr. Lswson
Bisbee.
g toh rong
Owingwind and the
w
rapidity with wh 'ch the flames spread
to all parts of the building, many of the
occupants had dilaculty in getting out
safely, escaping in their night -robes.
Practically none et the stook, furniture
or effects belonging to any of the parties
was saved, and t building is a total
wreck.
Fears were enter •ained for the safety
of Mr. J. T. Lam° y's restaurant and
confectionery store just north of the
Batton Block, and r. R. Clegg's brick
residence to the ea t, but these were not
in imminent da ger, and by seven
o'clock the flames vere well under con-
trol. An unfortunate circumstance in
connection with the fire is the fact that
some of the occupants had no insurance
on their effects, a d Mrs. McLean is at
pe away
presenton a isit.
The following i an estimate of the
as can be losses and insuran e as far
ob-
tained :—W. F. V uStone, loss on build-
ing, $0,000; insu d for 83,250; Mrs,
W. E. Aley, milli ery stock and house-
hold furniture, $2, 00;insured for $1,000;
L. G. Kruse, groc ry stock, $2,500; in-
sured for $1,500; re. ]McLean, house-
hold effects, $00 ; insured for $350;
Thos. Fells, hous old effects, $t]00; in-
sured for $300; Lawson Bisbee, house-
hold effects, $500; no insurance; Chas.
Swanson, househr Id effects, $500; no
insurance.
Airs. Aley had nearly $100.00 in money
in her bedroom and up to late yesterday
afternoon the molly had not been re-
covered and it i i believed has been
burned.
Mr. Kruse had his books partially .
destroyed ; Mr. Fe is secured his, while
those of Mr. VanS one were locked in
the safe.
As will bo seen ly the above estimate,
the loss to the °wilier and to each of the
tenants of the bui kling will reach a con-
siderable amount.
Mr. VanStone is yet undecided as to
what he will do i_ the way of re -build-
ing the block, bu will probably erect a
good substantial uilding in tl spring
to cover the who a of the c, ler lot.
