The disappearance of the front fence
in many Ontario towns has been follow-
ed by an agitation against dogs, which,
running wild, destroy the lawns and
flowers with which beauty
loving citizens improve the appearance
of their residences. The agitation is a
good sign of prosperity. Experience
shows the poorer the locality the greater
number of dogs it possesses.

The practice of municipalities sending
indigent insane persons to jail is becom-
ing a thing of the past. Dr. Bruce
Smith, Iuspector of Prisons and Chari-
ties, who has just returned from a trip
of inspection to Perth, L'Original,
Smith's Falls, and Brockville, reports
that there are practically no insane in the
prisons of Eastern Ontario. In the To-
ronto jail at this time last year there
were 36 insane inmates; to -day there are
only 3, and these may be regarded as fit
subjects for a House of Refuge. The
improvement in this respect is a matter
of much satisfaction to the Inspector,
who bas repeatedly declared against the
practice in his annual reports.

his daughter, Miss Johanna E. Gottfried

after which the guests sat down to a
sumptuous repast served on the lawn.
The groom was supported by Mr. Gott-

The bride was attired in cream silk,
while the bridesmaid wore a costume of
pale blue silk. The bride was the reci-

It is understood that Hon. Mr. M:al
theson, Provincial Treasurer, has de-
cided to be lenient with the Lemon
Bros. circus, which recently appeared in
this town, and whose license to exhibit
at twelve different localities in Ontario
was revoked on account of recent dis-
turbances in Quebec. After conversa-
tion 'with Mr. Charles E. McKee, mans -
gar of the circus, he concluded that the
reports from Quebec were considerably
exaggerated, and as no complaints were
received from places in Ontario where
the chow exhibited that harsh treatment
was unnecessary. He will therefore is-
sue the license, allowing the circus to go
on its way undisturbed.

Deafness Cannot De Cured
By local applications, as they cannot
reach the diseased portion of the ear.
There is only one way to cure deafness,
and that is by constitutional remedies.
Deafness is caused by an inflamed condi-

you have a rnmbling sound or imperfect
hearing, and when it is entirely closed,
deafness is the result, and unless the in-
flammation can be taken out and this
tube restored to its normal condition,
hearing will be destroyed forever; nine
cases out of ten are caused by catarrh,
which is nothing but an inflamed condi-
