Douglas, of Redvers, Assa., formerly of Gorrie, who were all but caught in a cyclone in that district about a week ago. They were lucky and happened to see the storm in time to escape from their house and get out of its path. As it was their house was blown to atoms and a quantity of furniture totally destroyed. The young man went West in March last and had been working near Abernethy until recently when he suddenly took ill with pneu monia. Tuesday night of last week, fire broke out in the rear of W. T. Johnston's boot and shoe store in the three-storey block on the south side of Main street, Listo- wel, and spread to Walter Bros ' general drygoods, both stocks being damaged. In addition Browdfoot's furniture stock was slightly damaged, while the build- ing was considerably damaged. The Johnston stock was insured in the Lon• don Mutual. Walter Bros. were insured in the Traders', Metropolitan, Anglo- American, Wellington Mutual, Econ- omical, London Mutual and Monarch. The offices of Magistrate Terhnne and W, E. Duncan McKenzie, V.S , a former 4th con. of Culross boy, who a year ago re- turned from tbe Philipine Islands, where he had been for two and a -half years connected with the U.S. army, has se- amed a good position with the Govern- ment of the new Republic of Cuba. He goes to Cuba on the 15th of July where he will be Assistant Veterinarian to the Chief of the Bureau of Animal Husband- ry. The position is practically a per- manent one, not depending on changes of government, and commands a good salary, besides paying necessary profes- sional and living expenses. Mr. McKen- zie bas been for the past few months at- tending a medical college in Chicago where he had intended gradnating as a medical doctor, but on account of the tempting offer from Cnba, "The Land of Sunshine," he has abandoned that in- tention. Nervous, Sick Headache. Mr. 0. A company is being organized in St. Thomas to manufacture voting machines from models invented by Chas. H. Jack- son, of Bridgeburg, Ont. The Dominion Government has just granted a patent on the machines. They are worked by a series of levers, which operate marbles and thus cast the vote. Experts, who have tested the machine, say it is abso- lutely impossible to do anything crooked with it, either by the deputy returning officer or the voter. No votes can be spoiled and the total vute at the end of the day's voting can be seen at once, though secret until the poll, closes. The company will first commence to make machines for municipal elections, for which they have several orders already, but should the Dominion Government adopt voting machines (and- the pro- moters have been assured by politicians at Ottawa that they will do so very shortly) there will be good chances of the Jackson machine being selected. Dutch Toast. Dutch toast is a simple dish for using up scraps -of bread. Crumble the bread and place in a frying pan with a slice of butter or drippings. Add salt, pep- per and sage if liked. It should be seasoned quite welt. Add a small quan- tity of boiling water, cover closely so the steam will soften the bread, stir several times and serve hot. The White King. Monterey. Monterey, a Spanish viceroy, had his name given to the California town in 1603. A Curious Lake. Lake Morat, In Switzerland, has the curious property every tenth year of turning red owing to the presence of certain water plants which are not found in any other lake in the world. For the Voice. The cutting of hair as a mourning observance is of very great antiquity, and among the ancients the entire Pop- ulation of cities and countries were shaved when a great man died.
